Gabbin’ With Amani Toomer

Giant great Amani Toomer will be running in the New York City Marathon on November 7th to raise money for the New York Road Runners (read more about the organization here). Toomer was nice enough to answer a few questions for GiantsGab about the marathon and about the Giants.

GiantsGab: Tell us about your decision to run in the New York City marathon.
Amani Toomer: I have been looking for ways to maintain my athletic drive since stepping away from football and I’ve had the bug for a while since I participated in an organized run during a Giants Draft Day 5K.When I heard that Timex was looking for someone to run the marathon for charity this year, I jumped at the opportunity to work with such a well respected brand in the running world. I am actually going to be starting the place dead last and for every runner I pass on my way to the finish line Timex is going to donate $1 to the New York Road Runners YouthPrograms.

GG:  Why the New York Road Runners Youth Programs and how can we get involved?
AT: A few years ago when my Foundation rebuilt playgrounds in the Bronx and Brooklyn, I had the opportunity to see how much of an impact this had on kids lives.  The NYRR program provides children that may not have the access on their own the opportunities to participate in fitness programs. Having the opportunity to encourage kids who might otherwise have no access to regular physical activity, by supporting running and health & fitness programs is extremely important to me. A few years ago my Foundation played a role in refurbishing playgrounds in the Brooklyn and the Bronx.  This is a perfect extension of that program.

GG: How is training to run a marathon different from training to play football?

AT: Nobody is trying to hit me! Honestly though, there are more similarities than people might think. The discipline I learned from my years playing football in the NFL and with the University of Michigan will keep me focused on training. Timex does a tremendous job working closely with the Giants medical team in utilizing the tools endurance athletes use on a daily basis to enhance their training program. Timex has paired me with 2009 USAT Amateur Triathlete of the Year Chris Thomas as my personal trainer and given me their newest technology the TIMEX Ironman Global Trainer Bodylink System which is a GPS enabled watch that helps me track my heart rate and control my pace.

GG: Steve Smith had a breakout year last year. Was this something you expected to happen?
AT: Absolutely. Steve is one of those rare athletes who has the whole package. I knew as soon as he stepped on the field he was going to be an impact player.

GG: What are your thoughts on this year’s Giant team?
AT: I just got to see the guys this week at the Timex Performance Center when I made my announcement about running the marathon and I can tell they are hungry and ready to get going. They have great talent and a lot of experience. They need start strong and win some tough games with their experience. I think they have the chance to make some serious noise.

Thanks to Amani for the interview and good luck to him in the NYC Marathon!
