Giants’ Steve Smith wants new contract with Greg Jennings-type money

Add New York Giants WR Steve Smith to the list of NFL players who want new contracts.

Smith told the New York Post he doesn’t intend to hold out from training camp but wants a new deal as he enters the final year of a rookie contract that’s due to pay him $550,000 next season.

Smith led the NFC with 107 receptions last season. But his contract demands come at a time when many teams are balking at signing long-term deals because of the uncertainty of the league’s CBA, which is set to expire after the 2010 season.

“I understand it’s making it tough on both sides,” Smith told the Post. “It’s bad timing for me to be doing well in the National Football League.”

Smith said his performance last season should elevate him into a higher pay level. “I deserve to at least be getting what these other players in the NFL are getting, like a Greg Jennings (of Green Bay), at least,” Smith told the paper.

Jennings agreed to a four-year extension last June with more than $16 million in guaranteed money.

Smith’s agent, Ben Dogra, told the Post that there are no talks ongoing with the Giants.

Does Steve Smith deserve that kind of money? Thoughts?

SS2 has really started to depart from what seemed like a quiet demeanor…for better or for worse?
IMO, it is never a good idea to discuss contracts with the media.
He could have said “that is something my agent is working on” or remain purposefully ambiguous.
The point being, is solicitation is a 50/50 proposition as it may seem “me first” to many involved with the Giants, but SS2 only has a very finite amount of time to make his money, at least for the on field aspect.
It is a fine line, but he takes care of business on the field, then the rest will work itself out.

He has one year left on the contract, if they don’t extend it, just play the year out and see what the market dictates, I’m sure the Giants will match anyone offering when the time comes, until then, prove that you’re worth that money, and that your numbers aren’t just a product of you being the only guy at the position with experience going into the season. I can understand if he had a few years remaining, but I don’t get these guys who have one year left, if you’re THAT good, then you’ll get paid, stop crying.

Steve Smith definitely deserves a Greg Jenning type contract. He has been clutch since his rookie year and was integral in theGints winning the Super Bowl. Signing him now before his contract expires makes perfect businessense has he is a player that Eli leans on and exposing him to free gency will cost more in the long run.
