Playbook: Big Base and NASCAR

Perry Fewell is pretty innovative. Knowing full well that the defensive line is a strength, the defensive coordinator is experimenting with different packages to get the most out of his guys. Two of these packages are Big Base and NASCAR. Both are similar, but have different wrinkles. Let’s start with Big Base.

Big Base is a package to put a lot of defensive ends on the field. Mathias Kiwanuka goes to weakside linebacker, Chris Canty slides to defensive end, and Rocky Bernard enters the game at defensive tackle. It’s a run stopping measure. Let’s diagram it.

The Giants are using Kiwanuka’s pass rushing ability to get after the running back. Confused? Don’t be. Essentially, Kiwi is acting as a 3-4 outside linebacker does. Tuck, at defensive end, is going to try to bring the tackle with him to the inside. Canty, is doing the same thing at Sintim’s side. If the running back goes at Tuck, Kiwi is there. If he goes at Canty, Sintim is there. If he goes up the middle, Bulluck is there. It’s a game of pursuit. Kiwi and Sintim are pursuing the ball carrier, with the line forcing the lineman to get out of their way. It’s a pretty good idea.

Now, here’s NASCAR.

It’s named NASCAR for a reason, because it’s all about speed, speed and more speed. It’s similar to what they did in the Super Bowl. Speedy guys like Kiwanuka and JPP are too much to handle for guards. Justin Tuck played this role brilliantly in the Super Bowl. As a guard, you can’t stop it. This is a way to get all your ends on the field, and just go crazy. 3rd down situations are probably the only use for it. Still, it can be really effective. ┬áSimple, but effective.

The Giants are also experimenting with defensive ends putting their hands in the ground and then going into coverage, and the linebackers blitzing. Just creating more confusion. The Giants were too predictable last year. With these new fronts, and maybe some more yet to be discovered, the Giants will be a tough defense to prepare for.

Sounds awesome, I just hate the fact that if we know about all this, I’m sure the teams that will be gameplanning for it sure will haha.

The other teams will know about it after game #1. Really lie they way Fewell is trying to put players in position to make plays. Honestly, I cannot wait to see this in action.
