Burning Question 3: Just How Good is the Giants Secondary.

Last year I truly believed that the Giants had enough at WR (although I was not against trading for Braylon Edwards) and this year I think the unit that will make the biggest leap is the NY Giant secondary?

Why.

Well Two Major Reasons.

First, the Giants signed Perry Fewell.

Perry Fewell can has shown that in his career the one unit he clearly nows how to piece together and get effective production.

And secondly, there is a TON OF young talent drafted highly in the secondary.

In the secondary right now there are  Four first round picks playing in positions.

Antrel Rolle, Deon Grant, Kenny Phillips,  Aaron Ross.

And six players drafted in the first two rounds

Terrell Thomas is a second round pick but played like a first rounder last year, the Giants first pick in 2005, 2nd rounder Corey Webster.  They also drafted Chad Jones who had the physical abilities of a first rounder.

but then the pre-season has happened and the depth of the secondary as really concerned me.

The Giants defense looked like swiss cheese vs the pass for much of the first half, like they weren’t prepared or something.

Coughlin said they played almost exclusively man to man.

“Part of the reason for that was because there was a lot at stake for our corners and the people in our secondary”. We needed to clarify, and put them in position where there was no question about their responsibility and just to see how it would turn out.”

The players listed at the cornerback (other than the big names) are Bruce Johnson, D.J. Johnson, and Courney Brown.

I hope some good veteran CB gets released.

The Burning Question is just how good is the Giants secondary?

Leave your thoughts.

I’ve been saying all offseason that the one position that the Gmen need to focus on is cornerback depth, we just don’t have enough quality corners, I was happy with the top 3, but knew something would happen, and now with Ross hurt (for who knows how long), this could be a serious issue. Let’s hope it gets fixed soon. Also I prefer the Johnson’s over Courtney Brown, he looked BAD on Saturday, really bad.

Webster was a second round pick

  3. Whoops that is correct.

He was the Giants first pick in 2005, but still a second round pick.

    Thanks, Rob.

Thats good to hear that coughlin was individually evaluating the secondary w man2man . Im guessing the reg season wont look anything like that garbage coverage on saturday. Hopefully fewell has more complex cover packages that he will display in the reg season and the secondary wont look like a pop warner team.

pretty sure there is a solid Corner looking for a paycheck in NY……Negotiate, Negotiate, Negotiate

We are extraordinary in the secondary. I’m not worried at all. We would have to lose at least two corners for me to get worried.

Ross and TT are interchangeable on the outside or in the slot so no weaknesses there. Corey Webster is in a prove it phase. He’s out to show Revis island isn’t the only island you can get lost on.

And Bruce johnson is good enough to guard someone with help over top or in spot duty used only sparingly over the course a season so not even he scares me when he’s on the field.
