Giants Colts Game Preview

It’s the Manning Bowl tonight in primetime as the 1-0 Giants travel to Indianapolis to face the 0-1 Colts. It’s Sunday. It’s primetime. It’s Eli versus Peyton. Let’s delve in.

The offense, especially the passing offense, looked good. Really good. The Eli to Nicks express train is a nonstop one to the end zone. And while the run game struggled in the first half, they picked it up in the 2nd half, and could be up for a big game. The Colts run defense is atrocious, and it would not surprise me to see big games from both Bradshaw and Jacobs.

The Giants will be without Kevin Boss, which will hurt. The Giants don’t use Boss often enough, but the threat of him takes away double teams. We will probably see double teams against Nicks and/or Smith. If that’s the case, look for the Giants to use the run game a lot. If Arian Foster can rack up 231 yards rushing, there’s no reason why Bradshaw and Jacobs can’t.

The Giants do have to do a better job of holding onto the ball. Last week, two of Eli’s three interceptions came off of tipped balls. Giving extra possessions to a great offensive team like the Colts is a recipe for disaster.

Throwing the first half aside, the Giants defense looked tremendous. The secondary is great. And now, with Aaron Ross likely making his return, it’s going to be even better. They will have to clamp down a bit more, since the Colts are a better offensive team. But, with a good pass rush, that shouldn’t be a problem.

I do worry about the Giants’ ability to cover TE Dallas Clark. Presumably, Michael Boley will be covering him. Can he cover Clark? I don’t know. The ability (or inability) to cover Clark could decide the game.

The Giants also shouldn’t use their “read and react” defense, which is built on bending but not breaking. Peyton will just dink and dump all game until they reach the end zone. The game plan needs to be built on pass rush and making Peyton uncomfortable.

New rule: Every time Matt Dodge goes back to punt, hold your breath. Because he was that bad against Carolina. It may have been 1st NFL game nerves. But that performance won’t fly against a team like the Colts. You cannot give Peyton Manning consistently good field position, or he will tear your defense up. This, more than anything, will decide the game. If Dodge can use his big leg to nail the Colts deep, the Giants have a pretty good chance. If not, it could be a blowout. You can get away with giving away poor field position against the Panthers. You can’t do it against the Colts.

The Colts are 0-1 for the first time in forever. They are not used to this. And even though their offense looks like it usually does, the Colts defense is really bad. Now that Bob Sanders is out, repeat’s of Arian Foster’s 231 yard performance could be commonplace. They just can’t stop the run, and it could be their Achilles heal. Like I said, the Giants have to pound the rock, because the Colts just can’t stop it.

It’s going to be a close game, and the Manning Bowl always promises to be good. But, I just don’t think the Giants can cover Dallas Clark. He’s going to have a big game. FINAL SCORE: Colts 31, Giants 28
