Giants Texans Halftime Thoughts

Yeah, that’ll do. Hell of a first half for the Giants, as they’re winning 24-3. Defense was all over the Texans. Offense was moving the ball and making plays. The Giants looked like a complete team in this first half.

After a rough first series or two, the Giants got it together. The Eli Manning to Hakeem Nicks connection has been nonstop and it’s been great. Nicks has had some amazing catches so far, and is burning rookie corner Kareem Jackson. Smith has had a few catches and even Ramses Barden got in on the fun. But it’s the Hakeem Nicks show. This is the passing game we’ve been looking for all year. Consistency. Big plays. The run game hasn’t had to do much, because they haven’t been asked to do much. Jacobs does have a TD, and Bradshaw does have a few good runs.

The defense, like last week, has just been all over. Not as many sacks, but similar pressure. Big plays. Limiting the run game. Jon Goff has been terrific. Corey Webster has an interception. It’s the aggressive, flying all over the place defense we saw last week. Even when Houston starts to move a bit, they clamp down. Another great performance.

The special teams hasn’t been special. Darius Reynaud botched a punt. Coverage has had penalties. Dodge has low hang time, which leads to bad coverage. These guys need some time to get downfield. Dodge hasa to kick it higher, to let them get downfield. It’s an issue, because bad special teams can kill a playoff team.

David Diehl did leave the game late in the 1st half with what looked to be a hamstring or groin issue. No word on the extent. Shawn Andrews replaced him at left tackle.

This is a different Giants team the past two weeks. Not sure what happened between the Titans and the Bears. But I’m okay with it. These Giants look focused, determined, and they look damn good It’s only been 1 and half weeks of these “new” Giants. But so far, so good. So very good.
