Thoughts and Musings

A bit hard to do Thoughts and Musings when there is no Giants football, and no real offseason chatter to talk of. Oh well. We keep plugging on. It’s how we do.

-I feel a little less bad losing to the Packers. Man, they are good.

-My Packers-Ravens prediction for a Super Bowl is still half alive. Even though I had the Ravens winning. I’ll stick with the Packers, and say they’ll win, even if I don’t think it will happen.

-I think the Giants have to look at the Steelers, the Ravens, see how their linebackers play. Swarming. Good on pass rush, good in coverage, good in run support. Solid all around. The Giants need that.

-Like it seems to be every year, a outside linebacker is the main need.

-Who that is, I don’t know yet. But, rest assured, I’ll have a favorite.

-It’s crazy we’re talking draft. But here we are.

-Some X’s and O’s, now. Lot of people have been talking about prevent defense, and how bad it is. I agree. But, let’s talk a little bit about it, to understand it more.

-Prevent defense is intended to prevent big plays down the field late in game. The theory is, you have everyone playing back, let the offense get 10-15 yard chunks at a time, hope they run the clock out. I’ve never been a fan. As I’ve said here, prevent defense prevents you from winning? But why?

-In prevent, pass rush goes away. I will maintain until the day I die that any team can be a good defense, as long as they have a great pass rush. Doesn’t matter how good (or bad) the secondary is. IF the pass rush is good, you’ll be fine. So in prevent, with no pass rush, good quarterbacks can take their time. That’s when guys like DeSean Jackson get free downfield anyway. You could be a great corner, but if you have to cover for awhile, you won’t be. When the GIants are in prevent, they don’t rush the passer. Hell, even if Tuck or Osi drop into coverage. So, how can you expect to prevent big plays?

-Giants, as always, need to stick to what they are good at: rushing the passer. They do that, they will be fine.

-Sorry for the short T and M, but not that much to talk about. THat will change soon.

  1. The Ravens and Steelers play a completely different defense then the Giants do

I would say the Giants hope their linebackers can play like the Bears or Seahawks linebackers (the Seahawks aren’t stout up front, but Lofa Tutup, Aaron Curry, and Hawthorne) can all play.

    Obviously Urlacher, Briggs can plaly.

even the Panthers have good linebacker play (but again nothing up front, or in the back)

  2. jh says:

wonder if watching the pats “drive to nowhere”, foot-shooting, 8 minute drive into what was essentially a modified prevent defense, makes you rethink your position.

had the giants been able to effectively employ the prevent they might have tackled the eagles tight end and their season might have been totally different. maybe they would have been able to get knocked out in the first round like the other nfc east team. we’ll never know.
