Thoughts And Musings

A pre Super Bowl version of T and M. Kinda crazy that this season is almost over. But we push on.

-Now that Jeff Fisher is out of Tennessee (and I don’t buy the fact that he left on his own volition), the Titans are in the market for a coach. Perry Fewell should get some interest. In fact, he may get interest past filling the Rooney Rule requirement. Although, I wouldn’t want that job right now. Owner seems to really have control over football operations, and for your first job, may not be the best. Still, you can bet he will interview.

-If he gets it, the defensive coordinator spot is open. Would Jeff Fisher come in?

-I doubt it, but it would be kind of cool to think about. One year stop before he gets another head coaching gig.

-Onto a little Super Bowl talk. I think the key is the running game. On both sides. Who gets the bigger chunk of the yards on the ground? James Starks has come out of nowhere to give the Packers a nice burst. Rashard Mendenhall is a good player–can he come through in the clutch? I think the Rodgers-Rothlisberger is sort of a wash. Defenses are pretty even (slight edge to the Steelers if Polamalu plays well). Comes down to the running game. I give an edge to the Steelers, but it’s slight.

-Really wish the Giants were in this game. They could’ve been.

-I think the Giants stay away from Plax. Assuming Steve Smith comes back, where does Plax fit in? As just a red zone threat? Seems like you might as well put Ramses Barden in that role, and do it for half the price. I just can’t see them bringing back Plax. Some team will sign him. He’ll probably play well. I just think the Giants want to stay away from a player, while incredibly productive, gave them a ton of headaches.

-I really want a Clay Matthews Jr type player on defense. I know he’s a 3-4 player (and another reason why I prefer the 34 scheme). But, someone who can rush the passer, ferocious, good in coverage. Who is that player in the draft? Ask Jesse Bartolis (who by the way is doing an amazing job on prospect coverage. Check it out).

-Corner would be nice. So would a tight end, that can stretch the seam.

-Speaking of tight ends, is Beckum that seam stretching guy? Hard to know, because they haven’t used him in that role. In college, yeah. But, we don’t know if he can do it in the pros.

-Musical interlude: Amos Lee, one of the best pure singers out there, dropped an album this week. It’s incredible. Seriously. I mean every song is incredible. As good of an album that’s come out in recent years. He’s on the periphery of mainstream. But he’s so good. Indie, singer-songwriter. The album flows so well, every song fits, and his voice, which is truly incredible, stands out. Get it. You won’t be sorry.

-I don’t think people realize how consistent Larry Tynes was this year. He’s no longer some of the Tynes. He’s pretty much all of the Tyne(s)

-Yes, play on words are fun. And corny.

-I think it’s now or never for Will Beatty. You know they’re going to draft a tackle. How much they believe in Beatty will determine how high the tackle is selected. He’s shown flashes. But, he should have had one of the tackle spots nailed down by this point, and he hasn’t. I know he’s been hurt, which has something to do with it. But, he needs to show something. Preferably soon, because his standing on the team could be in trouble.

-It’s weird, though, the offensive line is criticized, but they were so good last year, while suffering a lot of injuries. They’re getting old, and they need some youth in the pipeline, but as far as lines go, they are one of the best.

-The common wisdom is that Diehl will move inside to guard, Beatty will take over at left tackle. But Richie Seubert has been so damn good, how can you move him off? You can’t. A good problem to have, for sure.

-Need a dynamic returner. Who was the last dynamic returner? Dave Meggett? It hasn’t been that long, has it?

  1. nycsportzfan says:

    hows this mock draft sound?

    1. Gabe Carimi OT WISC- either LT or RT or G, he will excel somwhere…
    2. Mason Foster OLB WASH- all over the place LB, not 1dimensional…
    3. Davon House CB N.Mex St- Needed speed to secondary, and has ballhawk skills..
    4. Bilal Powell RB louisville- Good looking, phyiscal back with speed..
    6. brandon fusco c/g slippery rock- good small school prospect, and a need pick, can play guard or be future center in time…
    7. davonte shannon ss buffalo- hard hitter, with ball skills, size and run stopping ability..

    • That’s a fine draft.

It’s not a sexy draft. My comments:

Gabe Carimi is a fine player, I’ve stated that I’m not in love with him and prefer other players, but that’s a fine pick.
Mason Foster- is a gamer and a player I like a lot (profile coming soon) and is good value in the second round. There is better value, but he’s good valeu there.
Davon House-That’s the pick I like the most out of all of this. house is a very good player and third round is good value.

Bilal Powell-meh. For me personally I’m looking for a guy who’s good out of the backfield and a guy whos going to grind out tough yardage (a Mikel Leshoure, and Ingram I like). Powell is not that to me.

6th and 7th rounders-just look for guys who can play football, whic you’ve done here.

So in conclusion if the Giants go this route I’ll be fine with it. Not sexy, but still productive. I’d change the fourth round pick though.
