Draft Needs

We’re going to be all draft, all the time. It’s going to be a blast.

When thinking of the Giants, you realize that there aren’t too many holes on this team. The pieces are there for a big time run.¬†Inconsistency, injuries have played a big role in that run not happening. So, what can the Giants focus on in the draft to make that run?

First position is outside linebacker, specifically strongside linebacker. Clint Sintim hasn’t progressed as they hoped, and it seems to me that he’s destined to be a situational pass rusher. Not what you want from a second round pick. Lacking any other internal prospects, the Giants will have to look at outside linebacker. There’s a lot of depth at outside linebacker, so the Giants don’t have to get one in the first round, if they don’t want to. The only immediate impact player is probably Von Miller of Texas A&M, but he’ll be long gone by the 19th selection, and even if he wasn’t, he’s more of a 3-4 ‘backer. However, guys like Akeem Ayers, Bruce Carter, Mason Foster all have chances to be really good players.

The next need is offensive line, which is getting old. Right guard is set for years. Chris Snee is one of the best in the business. The really big question is Will Beatty. First, is he a left or right tackle? Physically, I’d say left. Now, can he play left tackle? I think he can. He’s shown it in flashes, and hasn’t really had the chance to get consistent playing time. If you give him the left tackle job, Dave Diehl moves inside to left guard, where he would be excellent. If that happens, where does Shawn Andrews fit in? He was terrific last year. I think he could fit in at right tackle. If you do that, then you only need a center of the future, as Shaun O’Hara is getting up there in age. That could be had in really anywhere. It really does rest on Beatty. If the Giants believe in him, then the need is less. If not, then you have to look at a left tackle, and hopefully someone who can step in right away.

The next need is defensive tackle. Although it’s hard to know with the CBA, it seems like Barry Cofield is a goner. You have Linval Joseph, but he barely played last year, and there’s a reason for that. You need a run stopping defensive tackle. Lots of depth at this position this year, so the Giants can afford to wait a few rounds.

Next, you have to look at corner. Not a starter. But a solid number 3 corner. Aaron Ross just isn’t cutting it anymore. Good cover guy, who isn’t overly aggressive will do the trick.

Return guy. That’s a huge one. If he’s a corner as well, the better. I like my return guys to also be versatile in the offensive game, a la Dexter McCluster. Jerrel Jernigan is a guy we’re profiling in the next few days who could fit that mold.

Defensive end. Don’t know what’s going to happen with Kiwanuka, so you need someone.

Tight end. I really just want a guy who knows how to block, and can do it well. With Pascoe probably moving to fullback full time, you need a solid blocker at that spot.

The big need is linebacker. Has been for years. Time to get an impact player who will last. What do you think the Giants needs should be?

I know I’ve mentioned his name before, but as far as versatile return man/offensive weapons guys (a la Mccluster), Randall Cobb out of UK is dangerous. I wouldn’t mind seeing a profile of him. Super productive throughout his 3 years (on a non-elite SEC team), good character guy, hard worker, could step up if needed as a slot reciever, but is DYNAMIC as both a punt and kick returner. Not a burner, but just a solid football player. I guess his relevance is obviously dependent on Hixon’s return, other needs etc. If he drops to 3rd/4th round I think he might be worth a look.

    Top Needs:
    LB (SAM)
RB (depends what type based on who they keep)
CB (really need 3 good CB’s these days)
    RT Future

    Who I like
LB: Bruce Carter, Hark Herzlick (could be the steal of the draft)

RB: Mark Ingram, DeMarco Murray, JaQuizz Rodgers, Kendall Hunter

CB: Love Ras-I Dowling, like Brandon Harris, Jimmy Smith (2nd round though)

RT: IDK yet, I feel that OL are great targets for later round picks, because they are great position to develop. And its not like we need a Day 1 starter.

    Dream Draft:
    1) Mark Ingram RB
    2) Ras-I Dowling CB
    3) Mark Herzlick LB
    4) OL BPA
    6-7) Dont care, already happy

some mock drafts have Mark Ingram falling past the giants, anybody think the giants would pick him up if he falls down to them?

just say no to mark ingram…

Giants fans have to let go of the past, wanting to find the next Rodney Hampton or Ottis Anderson. These big backs break down too easy and aren’t worth a first round pick. I want an explosive back that can help in the passing game. Stop with Ron Dayne Jr. For what its worth I hope my gmen never draft another Heisman winner again.
