Prospect Profiles: Marcus Gilbert

MARCUS GILBERT, OT, Florida

Triangle Numbers: 6-5, 320, 5.25

Scouting Reports:

Draft Countdown:

Strengths:
• Prototypical height and bulk with a large frame
• Athletic natural knee bender with a wide base
• Good balance, quickness, agility and body control
• Superb pass blocker and able to protect the edge
• Shows nimble feet to slide laterally and mirror
• Is stout at the point of attack and can anchor
• Displays solid instincts and overall awareness
• Great positional blocker and understands angles
• Can work in space and get to the second level
• Strong and capable of locking on to sustain blocks
• Terrific hand use along with violent initial punch
• Competitive and aggressive with nasty demeanor
• Mature and hard working with leadership skills
• Is battle-tested against top-quality competition

Weaknesses:
• Arm length and hand size are merely average
• Is not really a dominant, powerful run blocker
• Tends to stop moving feet after making contact
• Pad level gets high and leverage is inconsistent
• Will get caught reaching and leaning at times

Sideline Scouting:

Positives: Good athlete… Versatile… Good size with reasonably long arms… Good arm extension… Good strength… Can anchor well at POA, holds up well versus bull rushers… Very solid pass protector… Reasonably good agility… Very solid lateral movement and slide… Can stay with his blocks and mirror well but lacks consistency in this area… Very solid run blocker… Displays a solid burst into his run blocks… Flashes good power but will struggle to establish leverage… Good hand punch… Can control defender once locked on, kind of a mauler… Can get to the second level, more of a obstacle than actual blocker in space… Solid flexibility and body control… Very solid balance… Tough… Gives a good effort… NFL Right Tackle.

Negatives: Footwork needs work… Lacks consistency redirecting… Can be slow getting into his pass set… Not very explosive… Can be beat by speed… Will lunge to reach the corner and maintain contact… Doesn’t possess very good blocking range… Allows defenders inside his frame… Is too often pushed back into the pocket… Doesn’t stay on his blocks long enough, not a good finisher… A little awkward looking in space, doesn’t bring his feet… Doesn’t break down consistently well and will miss some moving targets… Struggles to keep feet underneath him when blocking on the move… Doesn’t appear to play with a mean streak, too much finesse to his game.

DraftInsider:

Tackle Marcus Gilbert is highly regarded by NFL scouts and it’s understandable why this is so.  Big and very athletic, Gilbert is a right side player we think offers the footwork, agility and movement skills to be considered for the blind side.  Gilbert makes good use of blocking angles, jolts defenders with terrific hand punch and controls opponents once engaged at the point.   He displays the ability to adjust blocking in motion and can hit a moving target.  Explosive at the point, Gilbert does a solid job bending his knees and blocks with a wide base.  He needs to improve his run blocking yet the arrow is pointing north for the senior.

GiantsGab Thoughts:

Marcus Gilbert is, in my mind, strictly a right tackle in the NFL. He’s probably going to be a 3rd round pick. You take him only if you think Will Beatty can handle the left tackle position. Has Beatty shown that? In flashes, in glimpses, yeah. But, consistently, he hasn’t shown it. If you don’t believe Beatty can handle it, you don’t take Gilbert, because he’s going to be a right tackle. Gilbert has the chance to be a good one, too. But, unless you have faith in Beatty, you hold off on Gilbert.
