Mara: No Franchise Tag This Season

No surprise here. John Mara announced that Giants will not use a franchise tag on any player this season. Giants rarely do this anyway. The only player they would consider franchising is Barry Cofield. He’s probably as good as gone, now.

I am suprized that they did not use it on kiwi. That means they need to sign smith and him and Bradshaw. Unless this means that they are not planning to keep some of them.

Smith is a definite keeper. Without a TE the Giants need him in order to stay on the field on 3rd down and to reck havoc across the middle.

Kiwi I believe will stay because his injury history will raise too many questions and he will need a year to prove himself. The only roadblock I can see derailing Kiwi’s return to the Giants is if he doesn’t want to play LB and he’s adamant about playing DE.

I would love to keep both Bradshaw and Smith.

Bradshaw is a good player but he’s replaceable. Smith is not.

I think franchising Cofield or Kiwi, would mean paying them close to 13 million this year (if a long term deal wasn’t reached), I doubt they’re looking to give either that much money. Absolutely no surprise on the lack of a franchise tag.
