Kiwanuka Cleared to Return to Football

Just four hours ago Giants general manager Jerry Reese said DE Mathias Kiwanuka’s career was “in doubt” and he may not be able to play again. What a difference a few hours make. The Giants’ — and Reese — have completely changed course and released the following statement just a few moments ago.

“After I spoke to the media this morning at the combine, I had a conversation with (head trainer) Ronnie Barnes, who confirmed for me that last night we did receive the final written evaluation that gives Mathias medical clearance to return to the field,” Reese said in a statement issued through team’s PR department. “The consensus of all of the spine physicians and Dr. (Russ) Warren is that it is safe for Mathias to return to play. I have talked to Mathias and he is fully committed to returning to football.”

This is great news for the Giants and Kiwanuka. He is a free agent but the Giants’ will likely try and sign him to a one-year deal where he can re-establish his value. However, the main issue now with his recovery is where. Come friday Kiwanuka will no longer be allowed to rehab at the Giants’ facility as the lockout will no longer allow any players to have any contact with the team.

Reese also indicated that Kiwanuka hadn’t decided whether it was worth the risk to his long-term health to resume his career. According to the newly released statement, though, the Giants’ former first round pick, and best defense player in the beginning part of this season obviously has. A good day for Giants fans.

You think there’s a chance Kiwi’s agent called Reese and said hey why r u telling the league he might not play again, ur costing my client a lot of money… so Reese said oh actuallllly he’s healthy

No I don’t think so. It seems Reese actually didn’t know the good news. I’m stunned, though. How do you, the GM, not know that information, especially before talking to the media. Those comments wouldn’t have costed Kiwi any money, anyways. He’s going to sign an incentive based deal likely that will let him re-establish his value. It seems he will be back. Where that is though, remains to be seen. I still think the Giants bring him back.
