Thoughts and Musings

Another Monday, another edition of T & M. Let’s do it.

-I’m really sick and tired of labor talk. One, I don’t understand it. I mean, I get the gist of it. Money, revenue sharing, player benefits, etc. But, I can’t understand the greed. I get the concept of greed. But, I think the fans are being slighted and that’s what I hate.

-Also lost in this is no free agency, which makes it hard to accurately predict draft needs. I mean, if the Giants are to pick up, say, Stephen Tulloch of the Titans, and move Jon Goff to strongside, they won’t need a linebacker. Or, if they, for some reason, sign Nmandi Asamough, then they won’t need a corner. You get the drift. So, assuming free agency doesn’t happen before the draft, the Giants won’t be able to target anything specific. It’ll have to be based on best player available, which is not a bad strategy, but they can’t target needs specifically.

-I find it somewhat hilarious that, in this digital age, the name calling is going through letters. So much for press conferences and emails.

-I’ve been thinking a lot about Martez Wilson, the Illinois linebacker. He was a middle linebacker in college. But, I think he’s best suited for the strongside. He’s so athletic, he can cover backs and receivers. Tight ends would not get open when he’s covering them. I think if he’s a middle linebacker, his coverage skills are limited. He’s not the best at run support, so you don’t want him at middle linebacker. If you have Goff at MIKE, who’s limited in coverage, and Wilson at SAM, you could rotate depending on the situation. Wilson can play in the middle on passing downs. It could work.

-I’ve also been thinking a lot about Anthony Castanzo. He’s going to be a great left tackle, and could very well be a Giant. He is, however, much better in pass protection than he is in run blocking. It’s not a bad thing. Giants tend to run on the right side, where Chris Snee leads the way. But, he’s not particularly well rounded, and that is a bit of an issue. You want your linemen to be well rounded. Castanzo isn’t. He can probably put on some weight and become a good one. But, if he starts Day 1, you won’t be able to run on the left side too often.

-I think we’ll be putting out a mock draft pretty soon.

-March Madness interlude: Love March Madness. One of my favorite sporting events. This year was no exception. My bracket is busted. But it’s still amazing to see how many games come down to the wire. It’s like, March comes around and teams know that they need to play close games. I love it.

-This is a dead time in football normally, even more so now. So, these posts may be a bit short. But, once there’s news, we’ll have it.

If I’m not mistaken Giants don’t start draft picks even first rounders, so Castanzo will have time to develop. Who was the last draft pick to start day 1?

I watched Wilson on some video at one of the sites and I didn’t think he looked great. I thought he looked slow to the play.

Am I mistaken that this draft seems weak? I’m not really thrilled this year about what the Giants might do although I am hoping we get Mikel Leshoure. I think a Bradshaw and Leshoure combo might make things exciting.

      No, it does 🙂

Matt Dodge. But if you mean besides special teams players, Barry Cofield. He may not have been the last, but he started every game of the 2006 season (his first).

Whether the Giants start a rookie or not depends on two things – the rookie himself, and the needs of the team. Castanzo, if drafted, is probably only 1 injury away from being in a legitimate competition for starting on Day 1.

And if I remember correctly he wasn’t supposed to. Feagles was to remain with the team for another season when Dodge was drafted.
