Giants 7 Round Mock Draft (Round 1)

The 2011 NFL Draft is just 12 days away, folks. This is the first of a seven series installment in which each pick for each round of the Giants’ will be profiled. I predicted the Giants’ would draft Jason Pierre-Paul, Mitch Petrus and Dennis Landolt (UDFA) last year. I had some wrong, too. I had James Starks going to them in the fourth round, but he didn’t.

With the 19th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New York Giants’ select:

Mike Pouncey, Center/Guard, Florida

The Giants’ need to upgrade their offensive line, which has major question marks heading into the 2011 season (If there is a season). C Shaun O’Hara, C Adam Koets and G Rich Seubert all ended the season on injured reserve and all had season ending surgeries. O’Hara is aging, Koets is coming off a torn ACL and Seubert may not start running until July or August. You simply can’t trust them. Even Giants Coach Tom Coughlin agrees with this statement, as he said during the NFL Combine that the center position will be an area of need this off-season.

The Giants also need to make a decision on tackle Shawn Andrews, who is due a massive $3.5 million roster bonus spot. With his chronic back problems, the Giants might decide to release him (Or re-do his contract, another possibility). David Diehl also missed time this season with a hamstring and hip injury. The Giants’ need depth, youth and stability added to their interior line. With the question marks with Will Beatty, too, the Giants will look for a OT, however, the guys they like (Smith and Castanzo) will be off the boards, so the Giants will go with Pouncey. Tom Coughlin likes his offensive linemen to be versatile, almost all of them can play more than one position. Pouncey can play both guard and center. David Diehl, Shawn Andrews, Rich Seubert, Kevin Boothe and William Beatty all played more than position on the line this season. While he won’t be as good as his brother, Maurkice, who was a rookie pro-bowler last season, he’ll be close to it.

Hey Guys, we’re organizing a fan rally at the NFL draft.

Check out or to find out how to get involved.

its not a flashy pick but a good one, everyone seems to forget that his brother wasnt expected to be a probowl caliber player when he was drafted, if they did he would have been picked higher than 18. That being said, i dont think mike pouncey will be as good as his brother, but as a solid (not spectacular) center who could start for 10 years you cant do much better at number 19

  3. JW says:

Adam Y: All very valid points. The question is, though, will he be at 19? Might he go #9 to Dallas? What about to the Lions at 13? Maybe even Miami at 15? We shall see.

  4. Jason C. says:

I don’t like Pouncey, and drafting him at 19 IMO handicaps your entire draft. I hope they go elsewhere, in fact, I really hope he gets picked earlier so we don’t even have to be faced with the decision. Picking a guard in the first round (I’ve seen him play center, and he is NOT a center) is always a reach.

  5. Adam Y says:

i think pouncey could fall to 19, dallas needs more help than an interior lineman (tackle, cough* cough*) and miami needs a quarterback or a RB. I could see the lions going for him but they really need some tackle help too.

i see a higher possibility for Pouncey being at 19 instead of anthony castanzo or mark ingram or tyron smith

    • Adam Y says:

also if its not pouncey or castanzo at 19 the giants might reach a little for a O-lineman, i dont want them too, especially with all the defensive talent in this draft, but they might none the less

  10. Chris says:

I personally don’t love Pouncey here…I thought Koetz and Beatty played pretty good last year and I want to see more of Peatrus…

I would like to see the Giants pick a DT like Wilkerson or Liuget at 19, resign Cofield and cut Bernard

  11. Chris says:

If we added Wilkerson or Liuget it would give us the depth and flexability to play more of a 3-4/4-3 hybrid…Wilkerson/Liuget can play DE/DT, as can Canty, Joseph and Cofield can play DE/DT/NT, Tuck can play DE/DT/ILB (he play alittle ILB last year) JPP can play DE/DT/ILB/OLB, Umenyoria, Kiwanuka, Sintim (and if we draft Ayers or Houston) can play DE/OLB, Goff can play ILB/MLB/SAM, Boley can play WILL, and if we draft Martez Wilson he can play all 3 LB spots…Rolle, Phillips, Chad Jones(if ever healthy) and (if we draft Jaquain Jarrett) can play Box Safety

We would have a dominating D again
