Thoughts And Musings

Happy Monday! Hope your weekend was good. I had a very interesting week. Late Tuesday night, find myself with an awful cough. Figure it’s allergies. Wake up Wednesday morning, voice is gone, cough is worse. Didn’t get any better throughout the day, or Thursday. Found out it was a sinus infection on Friday, and with antibiotics, feel back to normal. Medicine is awesome. But, for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday had no voice. I literally could not form words. It was awful.

-But, we plunge into draft coverage, which is oh so close. Some logistics. We’ll have our final NFL 1st round mock the day before draft day. Final Giants mock the day of. Profiles end the day of as well (if anyone can guess who the last profile is going to be, you’ll get an internet high five!). And then draft weekend will be awesome. We’ll reveal those plans later.

-Starting to think that Anthony Castanzo won’t be there at 19. He’s a sure fire starting left tackle, and his comparisons, Jake Long and Joe Thomas, went 1 and 3 respectively. Castanzo could go as high as 9, and won’t get past Detroit at 13.

-Without Castanzo, have to think of options. Popular pick is Mike Pouncey. Let’s get one thing clear: Mike Pouncey is NOT as good as his brother. He’s not a natural center, and won’t make the same immediate impact. He has a weird snapping motion that led to a lot of misfires last season. Maurkice is a once in a generation talent, someone who was able to anchor a good offensive line from Day one. Mike is not that player. If Mike’s last name was Smith, he would be a 2nd round pick, and would only be considered as a guard. That’s what he is: An above average guard. I’m not saying that he will be a bad pick. I am saying that at 19, you are reaching. I compare him more to Florida State’s Rodney Hudson. Both are 2nd round picks. Both are good offensive linemen. Hudson is probably better suited for center, whereas Pouncey is more suited for guard. Be wary of overdrafting based on last name.

-I think at 19 there could be some good options. If Mark Ingram is there, which is a possibility, I think you should take him. The best back in the draft, he will form a dynamic duo with Ahmad Bradshaw. Other options include: Corey Liuget, who is a perfect fit in the Giants defense. Muhammad Wilkerson, a very versatile prospect could be the pick. Maybe Gabe Carimi

-One to keep an eye on: Da’Quan Bowers. I know. He’s supposed to be a top 10 pick. But, his knee injury could have him slide. If he’s there at 19, you run up to the podium and get him. Bowers has knee issues, and his durability could be an issue his entire career. But, he is the best defensive end in this draft, and won’t have to contribute immediately. Imagine a front four, on passing downs, that features: Osi, Tuck, JPP and Bowers. That’s insanely good.

-That said, I don’t think he’ll get past Minnesota at 12. If he does, the only other team that would pick him is Tampa at 20, who would obviously trade up.

-A more realistic option, however, is Corey Liuget. I think he fits perfectly, and reminds me of pre-injury Jay Alford

-Which reminds me: Poor Jay Alford. Never the same after that knee injury. Before, he was an incredibly explosive 3 technique, who still has one of the fastest sacks of a QB that I can remember

-If the Giants are going to get back to the Super Bowl, need to get back to that crazy pressure. Ever since Spags left, they’ve only flashed it. At times, they’ve been unstoppable on D because their pass rush has been unstoppable. Other times, they played back and lost games. You have the horses to run upfield: Run upfield. Move Tuck and JPP inside on passing downs. Blitz guys off the edge more. Be aggressive!

-Giants will have to draft a base DE. Some options: Pernell McPhee, Markus White, Rick Elmore

-That person will essentially replace Dave Tollefson. An upgrade is needed.

-Wonder if the Giants would trade up in the 2nd, and select Leonard Hankerson, a receiver out of Miami (FL). Steve Smith’s knee if uncertain. Need a replacement, and Hankerson would be that guy.

I’m not going to act like I know whether Pouncey will be as good as his brother. What makes you believe so wholeheartedly? Did anyone predict maurkice to be a pro bowl 16 game starter his rookie year? I doubt it. So who says mike can’t do the same?
Would u also agree if eli’s last name is why he went number one overall?

I trust Greg Cossel who says Mike Pouncey is a 10 year starter in the NFL. We should “pounce” on him. I will be pissed if we go DE in round 1.

How is costanzo not passing the lions at 13? He is not joe thomas. Tyron smith will definitly be picked ahead of him and maybe solder. I also think if tryon smith falls out of the top 10 than we have to try to trade up for him. I feel like picking costanzo will discourage beatty to much. This could be his year.

  3. Sam says:

the problem isn’t comparing him to his brother the problem is thinking of him as a Center.Hes a guard first and then maybe a potential move to center, Pouncey is going to be a MONSTER at guard. I think Coach Flaherty will turn him into a beast interior linemen. The things hes done with players like Boothe and Koets imagine what he can do with the athletism of Mike Pouncey.Hands down the dream scenerio is to trade back with someone and add early 2nd and get a 5th rounder.

The closer this draft gets the more I’m losing interest in trying to guess who we’re taking at 19 because I really don’t think anyone is hands and feet over the rest.I think theres a lot of possibilities but no one that makes me say yes thats him other then Castonzo and even with him I’m not sure,I really like how coaches moved him inside to guard during the senior bowl.Thats what really has me intrigued of him.

Trade back and get an extra earlier 2nd so we can get a buffet of players to choose from.

Who is our starting LG next year? It’s not gonna be Suebert, his injury was too severe and was in week 17. Think about that, compared to Hixon. 7 month difference in terms of when their respective injuries happened, yet both aim to be ready by week 1? Hixon will be, Seubert will not be. Drafting Pouncey gives us our starting LG for the next 10 years.

Joe – you cant be serious when you say that drafting Costanzo is a bad idea because it will discourage Beatty too much. As if i need to explain, if thats what it takes to discourage Beatty, he doesnt belong in the nfl.

i agree with Geeeeemen, for the most part and also with Sam. As the draft gets closer it gets harder to see who the giants will pick. Also the top 3 or 4 Offensive tackles seem to be about equal. no one seems to be significantly better than the others. I dont know who the giants will pick but i have a feeling its Offensive line.

It could also be a o-lineman none of us have talked about either. No one saw Jacksonville going with tyson alualu in the first round last year and he had a very respectable rookie season. Maybe the Giants pick someone like that? just some food for thought

We have the Giants taking Akeem Ayers…complete mock can be found here: 2011 NFL Mock Draft
