Giants 7 Round Mock Draft (Round 7)

The 2011 NFL Draft is just days away, folks. This is the seventh and final part part of our seven series installment in which each pick for each round of the Giants’ will be profiled. I predicted the Giants’ would draft Jason Pierre-Paul, Mitch Petrus and Dennis Landolt (UDFA) last year. I had some wrong, too. I had James Starks going to them in the fourth round, but he didn’t.

With the 221’st pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New York Giants’ select:

Chris Neild, DT, West Virginia

He’s undersized at just a smidgen under 6-2, but boy does this kid have heart. Was the leader of the defensive unit at West Virginia. Has great intangibles. Although undersized he plays the run very well and can eat up space weighing in at almost 320 pounds. Has very active hands. Can get up and bat the ball down, too.

At this point he’d be an occasional run stopper, but for a 7th round pick, that’s all you could ask for. Right now the Giants have some issues at the DT position. Barry Cofield might have played his last snap in a Giants uniform, as he might be an UFA and the Giants don’t seem content on giving him a long term extension. Linval Jospeh is slowly coming on, but is not a guy you can count on yet. Rocky Bernard is at the tail-end of his career and Chris Canty is solid. A guy like Neild would add depth to a DT position that needs it.

*** This is the end of our 7 round mock draft. A day before the draft my FINAL mock draft will be posted. Expect a few changes! ***
