Thoughts And Musings

Happy Draft Week! We are getting so close to everyone’s favorite day. Thursday, folks. It’s almost here.

-Few logistical notes: Our final NFL 1st round mock will be on the site on Wednesday. Our final Giants mock will be on the site on Thursday morning.

-As for draft coverage, they will be as follows: We will live tweet the draft, providing instant pick by pick analysis. When the Giants pick, come back to the site. We will have instant analysis, video, scouting reports and more of each player selected by the Giants. This will be for every round. At the end of the draft, we will grade the Giants performance. It should be a lot of fun.

-Like I’ve said before, unless the Giants trade up, BC OT Anthony Castanzo, will not be a Giant. He’s just not going to be available. Common wisdom is that Florida OG Mike Pouncey will be a Giant. Very possible. But, he could be gone, as well. As early as 15 to Miami. Could go 17 to New England. If he’s there at 19, I think the Giants will take him.

-I’m not a huge fan of that pick. I think Pouncey is going to be a terrific player, a starter at guard immediately and for years after. I just think, at 19, it’s too high. I think he’s a late first, early second rounder. Because of his brother, he will be selected higher. It’s just not great value. At 19, there are players who can be more impact guys available. Taking a guard is nice, but it’s low risk. I think the Giants need to take more players like Jason Pierre-Paul. Take some risks in the first round, draft on upside. In the 2nd round, find a durable, versatile, dependable starter.

-Someone who could be a Giant: Colorado CB Jimmy Smith. Will be best player available at 19. Can be a shutdown corner in the NFL. Getting a lot of high praise recently, including being compared to Darrelle Revis. Could be a star, and could be a steal.

-I think the Giants will draft multiple linebackers and multiple offensive linemen.

-I think that the Giants may take a flier on a guy with character issues late in the draft.

-I do not think the Giants will trade up or down in the first round. In later rounds, it is likely.

-Don’t rule out another defensive linemen. Someone like Adrian Clayborn of Iowa, Corey Liuget of Illinois, Muhammad Wilkerson of Temple are among a few defensive linemen who could intrigue the Giants.

-Music interlude: Brett Dennen, one of my favorite singers, came out with a new album recently. The best song off that album, Sydney (I’ll Come Running) is just awesome. Listen here

-A backup QB could be taken in this draft.

-Giants will look, in general, for athletes and gamers. Guys who compete hard on every Sunday, love special teams. If those guys are super athletic, all the better.

-TV interlude: Started watching Treme this weekend. Great show. Explores post-Katrina New Orleans through the eyes of musicians. Terrific. Highly recommended. Comes from the same guy who created the best show ever, The Wire. So watch.

-Have you decided which network you are going to watch the draft on? I’m going with NFL Network. I just really like Mike Mayock. While I respect Mel Kiper, and appreciate all that he’s done (he essentially made the draft what it is today), Mayock has exceeded him.

-Giants will probably draft a receiver. Someone with return ability is a plus.

-Giants will not draft a punter. Matt Dodge is here to stay, folks.

-Sorry if I disappointed you with that.

-I think the majority of the picks will be guys who can play special teams, in addition to helping at their respective position. Special teams was the weakest unit last year.

Thats what im talking about jeremy! We need big time playmakers with huge upside in round 1, the giants can afford to take those types of risks because we have very little holes. I think Jimmy Smith is going to be there at 19 and I believe that if the draft the goes down the way I think it is with Anthony not being there, theres no way Jimmy isnt best player available.

Draft Board at 19 Anthony Castonzo,Trade back,Jimmy Smith,or Mike Pouncey
