Thoughts And Musings

Draft weekend has come and gone. That was quick. Thanks again to everyone who stopped by the site over the weekend. Tons of traffic, tons of fun. Let’s do this.

-I really liked the Giants draft. I did. Obviously, Prince was a steal at 19. I don’t think Prince or Jerry Reese or any draft expert thought he would be there at 19. But Jake Locker goes 8, Christian Ponder goes 12 and the dominoes start falling. Prince is a really solid player. The consensus number 2 corner in the draft, Prince is equally good in coverage as he is in supporting the run. He can get turned around sometimes, and that concerns you. But, starting in the slot, I think he will be great.

-Marvin Austin is boom or bust. Maybe more bust than boom. If he’s motivated, which is a big if, he can be a star. If he’s not, he’s out of the league in 3 years. It’s only a 2nd round pick, and you love the upside. He moves like a much smaller guy. If his head is on straight, watch out.

-My favorite pick was Jerrel Jernigan. I’ve been arguing for years that the Giants need a dynamic slot receiver/returner/wildcat guy. That’s Jernigan. He’s explosive, dynamic and is a threat to go to the house every time he touches the ball. I thought he would be a 2nd round pick. He went in the third. Steal.

-I like James Brewer. Has upside. Huge. Only started playing football in his senior year of high school. Long arms. Can move. He’s developmental. He’s not going to play much this year. Reminds me a lot of the Guy Whimper pick a few years back. Whimper didn’t really work out. Brewer might. If he develops more of a nasty streak, he could. Left tackle, right tackle. Versatile. He just won’t pay off this year.

-Tyler Sash, Greg Jones, Jaicquan Williams. Don’t know much about Williams. I like Greg Jones. Mike back, could move Goff to Sam back. Does he start? I don’t know. He’s a bit short, a bit thin. Might fit best on weakside. Still, he has talent and will at least make an impact on special teams. Love Tyler Sash. Hard nosed, intense safety. Not great athletically,  and will have to make his living on special teams. But, that’s where he will excel. I think that was a great pick.

-Da’Rel Scott. Very fast. Very, very fast. Fastest running back at the combine. Needs open space to operate. Once he gets that, he’s gone. Problem is, doesn’t always hit those holes. That’s why he was a 7th rounder. Still, can be a nice change of pace back. Might mark the end of the Brandon Jacobs era.

-I really liked New Orleans’ draft. Cam Jordan, top 10 pick, went 24. Can help the in the pass rush, against run support. Can play all over. Mark Ingram. Martez Wilson. Johnny Patrick. All really good picks.

-Loved Atlanta’s boldness to go up and get Julio Jones. Those are the kind of moves winning ballclubs make.

-Loved Green Bay. Love Randall Cobb, Ricky Elmore, Davon House, DJ Williams

-Not a huge fan of Tennessee’s draft, cause it’s all dependent on Jake Locker. If he succeeds, great. If he doesn’t, your draft is ruined. Hate those really big boom or bust picks early on.

-Jacksonville, in my mind, didn’t do enough to help itself now. Blaine Gabbert isn’t now. Will Rackley isn’t now. A few years from now, sure. But right now, not really helping themselves.

-Liked what Cleveland did, but after the first round. Didn’t like the Phil Taylor fit. But Jabaal Sheard, Greg Little, plus getting a first rounder next year from Atlanta.

-Loved, loved what Detroit did. Nick Fairley and Suh together is just unfair, pun intended. Getting Titus Young to take some of the pressure off of Calvin Johnson was smart, as was getting Mikel LeShoure to get some of the pressure off of Jahvid Best. Wished they would have gotten a corner, but they didn’t have that many picks. If Matt Stafford can stay healthy, man, watch out for the Lions.

-I think the 49ers rolling the dice on Kaepernick–knowing that he doesn’t have to start right away–was a smart gamble. If Jim Harbaugh is really a QB guru, then he has a lot of good things to work from with Kaepernick.

-Thought Seattle reached for James Carpenter, especially when Gabe Carimi was on the board. Other than John Moffitt, not a huge fan of their draft.

i think your underestimating Greg Jones.. Who cares about his size, hes the exact size as Curtis Lofton, also ran the same 40 at the combine as Curtis Lofton, and hes the same size as D’qwell Jackson and ran a similar 40 as him as well, and hes the same size as Jon Beason and ran the same 40time as him as well, and Jones was just as productive as any of these guys, if not more in college.. Jones is gonna be a freaking steal, of steals… Lofton,Jackson and beason all went in either rd 1 or 2…

I love the brewer pick, mainly because the onl thing hes really got to work on is technique, hes all ready got the size, athletic ability, and long arms, and hes had a solid degree of success on the college front, not all potential, another words, we’ve seen some on field success…

Sash is the type of guy you look back at, in 4-5 yrs, and some teams trying to give him a nice payday as a FA, like jim leohnard of the jets… Hes more of a thumper, but is instinctive and uses his smarts to make the big plays against the pass in big moments..

I really love every pick we made, including the WILLIAMS kid, as i learned more.. How do u not like a kid who as a 1st yr starter put up real solid numbers, and was a 2nd team all big east, and won a Defensive player of the WK once.. Reese projected this kid being well known after next yr, and probably a higher draft pick, if he had another yr of eligiblity and took a chance…

As far as other TEAMS drafts, i would have to say, the PACKERS really impressed me.. Getting House and Elmore when they did, was very impresive, and also getting both future bookends for Rodgers in a 2yr span is pretty darn good…

In terms of getting value and need at just about every pick, I feel the Giants had the best draft of any team. Detroit a solid second, the Saints draft I think is a bit overrated, good first round (though Jordan was a guy that moved up late and those guys hardly ever pan out), but not impressed with everything after that (then again this is the team that brought us Marques Colston), don’t like the Packers draft as much as you (not at all actually) and I’m happy with that being we have to play them this year, and of course the Jets brought in a few more criminals on their quest to become the Cincinnati Bengals. Well now hopefully we take in a couple of key free agents and are able to hold onto most of our own, let’s go blue!

Which Jet draftee is a criminal?

Just curious to know why you would not like the packers draft?? They started out getting one of the better OT’s in the Draft, and a guy who could of gone to Baltimore at 25, or philly for that matter, and know one would of said a word, and its the 2nd half of there BOOKEND TACKLE DUO, that can grow and become consistent with Rodgers.. TO get what GB has and all ready have a SB ring, plus have there DUO of Tackles all ready set in place, is downright awesome for them, in itself…

They proabably didn’t need to go WR/KR with Randall Cobb, but who cares, when your getting Guys like Davon House and Ricky Elmore later on anyways.. I mean, i had house rated as the top CB after Patrick, Prince, and Jimmy, and thought he was gonna go shortly after the start of the 2nd round… I coulden’t believe he slipped to end of RD 4, what a steal! Elmore is that blue collared, pass rusher, that will fit in well with that team, and gives them a nice pass rusher outside of Clay Matthews..

They reached a bit on Alex Green, but the guys a banger with speed, and has above avg hands, and is the perfect fit for GB, and gives injury prone James Starks some competiton, and GB, some insurance..

They also got great value with Lawerence Guy in the 7th round..Guys certainly got the ability, just gotta play with fire more consistently, but in the 7th round, heck of a value…

Then u got DJ Williams in rd 5, which is fantastic.. The Packers love to use the Pass Catching TE’s that can line up in the slot, and with Finely’s injury, they get a nice insurance policy..

To me, Packs Draft was made with the 1st round pick, just becasue it was so smart to get the 2nd bookend for Rodgers, and with Driver all but out the door, they snatch Randall Cobb, whos versatile and can do many things, and then Elmore, and House and Williams.. When you get Sherrod, Cobb, DJ Williams,Davon House, Ricky Elmore, and a sleeper Lawerence Guy, you’ve done well…

I did love the Packers draft. as I wrote “Loved Green Bay. Love Randall Cobb, Ricky Elmore, Davon House, DJ Williams”. Thought it was one of the better ones.

      • Jason C. says:

I don’t see Sherrod being any good in the NFL (I could be wrong, but I think he’s more of a big/strong guy with plenty of measurables and not so much a football player), Elmore is another flashy guy that just doesn’t strike me as that great of a player (then again playing alongside Clay Matthews could heighten his game), Cobb is boom or bust so jury’s out on him, and DJ Williams made little to no sense as they already have two of him on their roster (if they were going to go TE they should’ve went for more of a blocker). I see why people like what they did, it’s easy to see strengths in their draft, I just feel they got a whole class of players that could all fall flat of expectations.

ya, i was replying to Jason C about pack draft, fuchs…

You love Atlanta’s bold move ???? There is a school of thought that says you shouldn’t draft wide receivers in the first round. Trading a 2011 1st, 2nd, and 4th AND 2012 1st and 2nd is INSANE. I don’t care how good Jones turns out to be.
