Thoughts And Musings

Happy Monday, Gabbers! Been nonstop busy since about last Tuesday. Will calm down after Wednesday. But still. I don’t mind being crazy busy, it just gets tiring. So, let me take a break from my busyness and bring you a fresh serving of T and M.

-It kinda sucks that there is no rookie minicamps. Can’t get a look at the draft picks. Can’t see any undrafted guys. No rookie mini camp, no Victor Cruz. That’s one of the worst parts of the lockout: the undrafted guys get screwed.

-I kind of wish that there would have been some relief for that. No need to screw over the undrafted guys in the labor dispute.

-So, we’ll have to wait a bit to see how Prince, Marvin and Jerrel are going to do.

-Looking for a fantasy sleeper? Roy Helu to the Redskins. Perfect fit for that scheme.

-Other than Jernigan, whose biggest impact would be on special teams, I don’t see the Giants producing a fantasy star from the freshman class. Maybe Da’rel Scott, but I don’t see him getting enough touches to make a big impact,

-Loving the fact that Hakeem Nicks has bulked up. If he doesnt’ lose any of his explosiveness, you’re looking at a top 5 receiver. He has all the tools. With a little bit better health and just a little bit more consistency, the Giants have the next Michael Irvin on their hands.

-To think that they got him 29th overall, that’s a steal.

-The Bengals are hoping that AJ Green, at 4 overall, is going to be a star. The Falcons traded their whole draft for Julio Jones at 6. They may pan out and they may be great. Or they may be busts. But for Nicks to be as good as he is at 29, is just awesome.

-Wonder how Steve Smith is going to be after his injury. That was pretty gruesome.

-But, if Manningham steps up, Barden matures a bit, Jernigan, Eli will be fine.

-I do wonder who is going to be the strongside linebacker is going to be. Let’s assume Bulluck isn’t going to be back. So, is it Sintim? I don’t think the coaching staff trusts him. Do they move Goff outside and plug in Dillard? Sign Stephen Tulloch? I really don’t know, and if camp starts on time, that will be the most interesting battle.

-If it doesn’t start on time, then who knows.

-Reading interlude: Been on a reading kick recently. Read The Extra 2%, by Jonah Keri which is about the Tampa Rays’ resurgence. Just finished Play Their Hearts Out, by George Dorhmann, which chronicles the crazy world of AAU basketball. Note to parents with young basketball players: Read that book. AAU seems very shady and the people involved don’t seem to have the best interest of the kids at heart.

-Interested how big of a leap Matt Dodge takes. He obviously showed promise his first year. I don’t know how he cuts out the mental errors. It’s possible, but he really just has to commit himself. Can he?

What about plax? I dont think he will be back with the Giants and I don’t k ow whether or not that is good or bad. I don’t think he will be a bad teammate/distraction wherever he goes, but do we really want him in the NFC east? Or the NFC? Barden – the plax replacement – is still all potential and no production thus far. If Smith is not 100% by September (and how could he be?), are we really confident with Nicks, Manninghan, and the rest? Plax knows our system, and since KG has called the same plays for 4 seasons, he will know the playbook. We know Eli trusts him. That will be interesting to watch.

Our LBs- who the he’ll knows anything. This time last year we were penciling in Sintim-Bulluck-Boley. Turned out to be Goff-Boley-deon grant. Hopefully, Greg Jones stands out.

LOVE nicks, and hopefully he is the next Irvin. Just upset because it looks like Dez Bryant is also in that same mold. He is a player.

Idk what will happen with Bradshaw, but I would think Jacobs is definitely staying. Why why why can’t we design a few plays where there are in the backfield together? Handoff to Jacobs up the middle. Next time u play action and toss it to Bradshaw wide. So many interesting plays you could draw up to fool the defenses. But were not about creativity, were about execution. Execute the same lame boring plays the Gilbride calls and well score 20 pts against good Ds and 30 pts against bad Ds. I never feel like we have some new, opponent-specific gameplan.

If there’s no training camp, how will any rookie (league-wide) be able to make any impact this season? I would have loved to nab Herzlich, but with drafting 2 LBs, is there room?

But luckily, Dez Bryant isn’t right in the head, players like that sabotage themselves by their third season, we should start to see signs soon, stay tuned…

Blame all typos on writing from my iPhone.

  3. Sam says:

I like Tulloch but what about Barrett Ruud in the MLB? I really think Goff is better suited on the strongside because hes very good playing down hill on run downs.

  4. Sam says:

Jerrel Jernigan is my early pick for being rookie of the year, I know thats a long shot because Coughlin isnt big on playing rookies too early but I have a really good feeling about this kid, hes going to be a game changer.

And please bring Plaxico back, it would be a great story and I think it would be instant connection with him and Eli.

  5. Eric says:

No plax. Eli now has a great connection with nicks manningham and smith, and he now needs to grow one with Jernigan! Why would you want to take away from that?

  6. Jason C. says:

If there’s ANY concern over Smith going into the season, then Plax HAS to be looked at, unless Barden is going to show something he hasn’t the past two years (year 3 is “supposed” to be the year WR’s step up).

Come time for training camp to break, Matt Dodge hopefully is jobless (maybe homeless, definitely already worthless).

    • Geeeeemen says:

What has Barden done to give hope of year 3 being the breakout year? Hes had 2 good training camps. Average to below average preseasons. 1 decent half of nfl football, then he got hurt.

      • Jason C. says:

Absolutely nothing, that’s why I put supposed in ” “. Personally I’d be willing to cut ties with him if that’s what it takes to bring back Plaxico.

  7. Eric says:

No way! Barden got his chance during the first game against the cowboys and he had a couple of good catches and he was getting open but he got hurt. He didn’t really get much of a chance other than that because nicks smith and manningham are in front of him on the depth chart and we really only run 3 receiver sets! Why would you guys want to possibly ruin that chemistry between eli nicks and smith and manningham and not have other guys progress as well like Cruz barden and now Jernigan?! Plax is a distraction!

    • rudy 29_30 says:

Cruz and Barden are going to be fighting tooth and nail to stay on the roster:

With Nicks, Smith, Manningham, Jernigan, and say Hixon in, that leaves 1-2 Wr spots will be open if they’re lucky. Clayton, Thomas, Hagan, Barden, Cruz, Calhoun, Giguere, and some UFAs are all going to be fighting for the spots. I would not be surprised if Barden comes up short in camp, if there is camp, and is released.
