G-Men May Look to Ink Kiwanuka to a Short-Term Deal?

The NY Post seems to think that the Giants game plan with Mathias Kiwanuka may be to try and sign him to a short teem deal to see if his neck can hold up through a full season.

Mathias Kiwanuka, one of the most versatile defensive linemen in the NFL, was the Giants best defender after three games last season, recording a team-high four sacks but he missed the last 13 games with a herniated disk in his neck. Kiwanuka opted not to have surgery, was cleared back in February to return to football activity and should be all-systems-go for training camp. This particular injury, though, gone for now, is never forgotten and Kiwanuka will need a season to prove his neck is fine and can withstand the violent impacts required in his job. That is why Reese has ruminated, “Do we offer him a one-year deal so that he can re-establish his value or do we go in a different direction?” Kiwanuka, 28, is a special athlete — remember, he also can play linebacker if needed — and Reese figures to retain the former first-round pick with a low-risk, short-term deal that makes sense.

Considering his start to the 2010 season, I think we should try to bring him back, to see how he can do.
He’s been a team player, he deserves it. Plus he’s a 1st round pick, you don’t just give up on them like this.

I don’t see many teams offering him a lot of money too …

we need to keep kiwanuka and trade Osi to Oakland for all there draft picks lol we definitely should take advantage of Osi’s value right now and move him and get some good draft picks and start JPP. If we resign Dave T. that’ll leave us with 4 DE’s and we should use Sintim as a DE/LB.I love Kiwanuka he’ll help the DLine think as one instead of thinking about themselves like Osi. Kiwanuka,Tuck and Canty are great team players and they’ll help keep Marvin,JPP and Linval grounded and turn them into great professionals.

Kiwi….I mean, what else do you do w/ the guy and an unknown neck?! Doesn’t make sense to ink him long term and it really doesn’t make sense to just let him walk. I think this idea is great, and it makes sense considering JR has been saying it now for months….as have I.

having said that…I think Fewell has gotten more outta Kiwi than any DC previously, and I think that’s not an accident. I just see Kiwi as this roving Dlineman that can play LB. When I look at JPP I see a DE who IMO is going to be > Kiwi in the very immediate future.

trading Osi would be great if JR gets good value. if he doesn’t I wouldn’t pay Osi jack and see if he’s really willing to sit out.

I don’t know if trading Osi would be “great”. Yes, it would be better that having him underperform or holdout. But he’s good and without him we suddenly become slim at DE.
