Giants, Boss agreed to verbal deal; Smith offered long-term deal last year

The Giants and now Oakland Raiders TE Kevin Boss had agreed to a verbal deal before Boss “hit the lottery,” this according to Giants owner John Mara. Mara, who was on ESPN Radio, said the Giants and Boss had agreed to a deal, but Boss struck it large and decided to take the money.

Mara also said that the Giants offered WR Steve Smith a long-term deal last season that would have made him one of highest-paid WRs in league. Mara then went on to say how the Giants had offer on table for few weeks to Smith and waited for a response, and never received a response. Also according to Mara, the Giants would have liked to counter-offer the Eagles offer to Smith, but probably wouldn’t have matched it.

might have to call BS on this. Why wouldnt Smith take a big money deal last year?

  2. Gmen says:

I believe it.. Reese is a liar – not Mara

  3. k.g. says:

How is Reese a liar…anyway…I trust Mara, he wouldn’t lie about this. Smith gambled and lost, he wanted to test free agency and then he hot hurt.

I believe mara and this sure smith wanted to test his worth in F/A…….and i also believe Boss and the gmen had a verbal agreement.not hard to believe….unfortunately money talks .and they both took it…Brandon jacobs, Rolle, and the players that restructured show class and a loyality to their team and their fans,,,Im soooo proud of them..very dissapointed in steve smith….for his comments today

Reese is a liar because he lied to Osi. Say all you want about the way Osi handled his contract situation but Reese never denied that he told Osi he would give him the money. Remember, Osi did this in a SWORN affidavit meaning if he’s lying he goes to jail. He also did it on his own volition. Reese definitely has the history of lying. But Mara I’d trust.

If Mara is saying it, it’s true. He’s one of the most, if not the most, classiest owners in the NFL. I don’t doubt they gave Smith a large offer, because sources have seem to indicate that. Regarding Boss, that’s just how free agency works. They almost had Boss. They weren’t willing to go anywhere over $4 million guaranteed and the Raiders doubled the offer (probably about $1 million more a year, too.) Just part of the business.

I’m over who USED to be here, let’s focus on who we have now Jernigan, Cruz, and Hixon will more than make up for Steve Smith, and I’m excited about what Beckum can bring this team.

  6. JW says:

Jason C: very valid points, my friend. Beckum has had bad mental lapses in practice when he actually is practicing and not hurt. He needs to get on the field first on a more consistent basis before I can jump on the ‘Beckum Sleeper Bandwagon.’

We Giants fans have been saying that for a few years now bout Beckum. Its his time to shine so here’s a message for Beckum: Put Up Or Shut Up!

  7. JW says:

BD: Brilliant point I feel many people often forget. The game is played on the field, and until it’s played, simply, well, shutup.
