Time for Aaron Ross to Step Up

With Terrell Thomas out for the year, Aaron Ross becomes your number 2 corner. For many Giants fans, this causes distress. The former first round pick has battled injuries and inconsistency in his career. He’s flashed some good plays, and made some awful ones.

In this preseason alone, he’s covered Roy Williams like a glove, but missed tackles like crazy against Carolina. He’s an enigma. For all his talent, which is considerable, there is something not clicking.

But, it will have to click. Ross will have to cover some top receivers. He’s going to have to sure up his tackling. He can’t make boneheaded plays. He’s going to have to grow up as a player. And do so overnight.

Can he? We don’t know. We know he will be tested. How he responds will determine a lot about the 2011 Giants.

What do you guys think? Is Aaron Ross up to the task?

Saturday night will tell. We’ll see if the Carolina game of the Chicago game was the true reflection of his game at this point. Covering Holmes/Buress/Mason will be all telling. I am hoping that the Bears game was not a fluke (or that it was a mirage since he was covering Williams).

I think a retired Sam Madison is a better option. Last year, Ross had the highest percentage of balls completed against the guys he was covering in the entire league. He also led the league in allowing 3rd down catches for first downs.. he stinks and the Giants have to sign AT LEAST 2 guys this week. Lito Sheppard is a start and hopefully some older guy gets caught up in the Gap game and we can sign him..

Granted Dave. Ross looked lost last year and in the Carolina game. He looked pretty good against the nbears, but that may be because all the plays he made were against that bum Williams.

Before I start comparing him to Emlen Tunnell I am going to have to see it in a few games in a row. This coming Saturday will be a good barometer since he and the 1’s will probably play the majority of snaps. We’ll see how he does against legitimate receivers like Homes, Burress, and Mason.

Like I said, I am wishing and hoping that the Bears game was an indication that he may have turned the corner. We’ll see (Fingers crossed)

OK….Attention: Aaron Ross, Travis Beckhum, Linval Joseph, William Beaty, and Kenny Phillips. Now is your time. Its time for you guys to step up and live up to the hype of your high round selections in the draft. This is where Reese’s talent evaluation will really shed light. These were all 1-3 round picks in recent drafts and if they fail he fails. These, my fellow Giant fans, are now deemed: REESE’s PIECES!

We don’t have a real test until week 3 against the Eagles> By that time we will have Osi back and maybe even Prince! These guys will gel in the secondary by then and they will be getting a promising young star back to the Defense. The offense has to rise up and put up big numbers and the pass rush has to be on point and we will survive.

    • Jason C. says:

I wish I had your optimism, I don’t see either guy coming back until week 5. As for Ross, he can be a solid starter, but he won’t replace Thomas, they need to bring in another vet at the least to be our nickel guy.

  4. Chris says:

I think Ross will be solid. If he returns to the first two years Ross, the Gmen will be okay. If Eli steps up and delivers a potent offense with a punishing ground attack, that could eat up the clock and help the defense. The best defense is a good offense.

    • Dean says:

Agreed Chris, its just more pressure on Eli to do his thing and help out the defense.
