Thoughts And Musings

Good Monday morning all you Gabbers. Real football in only a few days. I’m excited.

-No real surprises on the cut list. I guess cutting Phil Dillard and Adrian Tracy were a bit of a surprise, but the other young linebackers simply outplayed them. Greg Jones clearly outplayed Dillard, both on special teams and on defense. Jaicquan Williams showed tons of raw ability and speed, something the Giants don’t have. Spencer Paysinger looked like a veteran. And Mark Herzlich played smart, instinctive football. What other choice did you have then to cut Dillard and Tracy?

-Granted, the Giants did place Tracy on the practice squad, but I think it speaks volume to play of the rookie linebackers that Tracy ended up there, and not Paysinger or someone else.

-Although he punted well, cutting Matt Dodge made sense. Steve Weatherford is a veteran, and a good one at that. Unless Dodge clearly outplayed him (which he didn’t) then Weatherford was going to be the choice.

-The whole strep throat thing with Sage Rosenfels seems a bit mysterious. He said he was feeling fine. Obviously, not well enough for the Giants, who went with David Carr. I don’t think you could’ve gone wrong with either QB. Both are smart, can win you a game if need be.

-I don’t know if the Giants will pursue any of the guys cut by other teams. Maybe Dante Rosario, but he’s similar to Travis Beckum in terms of playing style. Rosario is a bit bigger, but not by that much. Joselio Hanson is another guy, but these guys are cut for a reason.  Barring injury, I’m pretty sure this is what the 2011 Giants are going to look like.

-I’m really liking how the running game is shaping up. Brandon Jacobs looked rejuvenated. He was running hard, and with purpose, and with his size, when he’s running hard, watch out. Bradshaw looks like Ahmad Bradshaw. And if Da’Rel Scott can provide that sort of speed against first team defenses, you’re looking at an awesome run game.

-Speaking of Scott, his acceleration is just mind boggling. He’s just so damn fast. He ran a 4.3 at the combine, but I think he’s faster than that. I hope the Giants can find some creative ways to use that speed.

-I think the decision to move Antrel Rolle to corner during nickel situations was smart. Giants have depth at safety, and putting Rolle there just makes sense. That’s why depth is so important. The Giants can afford to be versatile and flexible with other players when one position is devoid of depth.

-I’m starting to wonder if moving Mathias Kiwanuka to linebacker is the right move. It’s not his natural position, obviously. We know he can do it. But, I think you’re wasting his talent. I think you can use him in a variety of ways, but keeping him at defensive end full time is the right way to do it. Use him as a joker, stand him up, but don’t make linebacker his listed position. I think Mark Herzlich or Spencer Paysinger could fill that role and do so admirably. I think it’s just a misuse of his talent.

-I think Eli is poised for a big year. The interceptions were an anomaly, mostly because I just can’t imagine receivers tipping balls like that again. With Manningham, Nicks, Hixon, it’s a good receiving core, and I think with good protection, Eli will go off.

-Facebook interlude:  I don’t like how they redesigned the chat feature. I love Facebook chat and use it frequently. But, the instituted a “most frequently chatted” side bar. It makes sense in theory: The people who you normally chat with are all in one place. Problem is, the people on the list are people I never chat with. Or never see. Or talk to. Or anything. Some of it is right. But half of the people are those Facebook friends that you have on Facebook because you met them once and then don’t interact with ever again. You can’t edit the list, either. I don’t get it. I’ve been trying to figure out the formula for how they do it, and I think it’s part who you’ve chatted with, who you’ve been tagged in pictures with and whose wall you write on. But it’s only half accurate. Mind boggling.

-I’m curious to see if Jerrel Jernigan can build on his performance from the last preseason game. We finally saw his talent. He still has trouble catching the ball (a big issue). But you can see the explosiveness. Can he build on this? Or will the Giants have to make a change at punt returner (with Hixon or Thomas being the other likely options).

-I’m hoping Rocky Bernard builds on a strong preseason. Maybe playing on a smaller contract gave him some extra motivation.

-I think making Henry Hynoski the full time fullback is a risk, but a worthy risk. He’s a throwback. But he’s young and inexperienced. Keeping Bear Pascoe healthy is paramount.

-Mac interlude: My MacBook battery life has just been awful lately. Any suggestions? Do I have to replace the battery?

    Cruz active roster?

    • Jason C. says:

He’s on the 53, but once they get healthy, that’s a big question. With Thomas as KR, and Jernigan as PR, keeping 6 WR on active roster could be hard, however Cruz has showed he will play special teams and even made a couple tackles this preseason, so there’s a chance they keep all of their WRs active.

Hanson got cut because the team already had an average of 30 million per year tied into corners and didn’t want to pay him the 8 million over the next 3 years on top of that. He’s still a worthy player and should certainly be looked at by the Giants.
Not going out to get a TE over the past 3 years (something that should’ve been done a while back) is going to haunt them. I like Beckum and hope he can step up, but going into the season with him as the starter is certainly a risk. Speaking of TE’s anyone shocked that Kevin Boss will miss week one due to injury??

go to the genius bar at your local apple store and have your battery checked. I had the same problem and had the battery replaced. if you have a warranty as I did they did it for free.

When was the last time you recalibrated your battery? It should be done monthly as part of your Mac’s routine maintenance. The process is a little different depending on which model you have. Check the Apple support pages (or just google it) to get the instructions for your model. If you recalibrate regularly and it’s still not holding a reasonable charge it may be defective.

I know Kiwanukas is labeled LB but hes going to be used just like last year, 1st and 2nd “Big Base” defense with him at SLB then on 3rd blitz from everywhere or go “Nascar” with him,Tuck,JPP,and Osi on the line. They cut Joselio Hanson because of his contract. We need to pick up Joselio,I love Rolle at slot because of his tackling ability but i like Hanson to play slot because he can really stay with the quick inside WR’s.Plus it allows us to play obvious passing downs with 3 Safeties,3 DB’s,Boley and Nascar on the line.

Correct Jeremy no real surprises they needed
speed at linebacker, they have it. I agree about
Kiwi, let’s wait and see what happens.
Scott could help out of the backfield.
I hope things work out for Dodge good guy,
maybe the iggle’s pick him up!
