Film Notes: Defense

We continue with our heavy film day here at the Gab. Now we focus on the Giants D. Notes will be from Greg Cosell, with our analysis.

-“Giants did a good job re-routing slot receivers, Disrupted timing of the Packers pass game; It was one reason Rodgers ran the ball so many times – You force Rodgers to run you win that down even if he gets a 1st down”

Rodgers did run a lot, but I think all things considered, it is “winning: the down. Smith can run, as evidenced last week. But I’d rather him run that Vernon Davis make play.

-“Kiwanuka did not play that many snaps in this game, In fact his snap count had gone down dramatically in the last 3 games – Only about 20 snaps per game in the last 3 games.”

I’ve noticed this a bit. Wonder why.  I thought he was really active in the last Dallas game. But Jaicquan Williams has been terrific, as has Blackburn. Not much need for him. Time to part ways?

-“Giants continued to utilize Tuck in a roving 2 point stance in their nickel sub-package; Often did that out of “Nascar” personnel, with Umenyiora, Pierre-Paul and Kiwanuka on the field. Boley sack near the end of the 1st half came out of “Nascar” personnel; “2 man” coverage with Boley responsible for Starks in coverage, Boley rushed forcing Starks to block him, Boley blew up Stark.”

I would love more of this. That Nascar personnel is effective, especially because now it allows someone like Boley to rush and get a sack.

-“Giants corners played very well in man coverage, Many times Packers WR were not open”

The Giants corners really have been stellar this postseason. The 49ers do not have the receivers the Packers do, so this should continue.

-DT Joseph again stood out on film, A very good run defender

What we’ve been saying all year. Nice to see that backed up by the guru.

-Giants at times matched up Boley on Finley in their man coverage concepts

This will be the matchup on Davis. More:

  • Rodgers inaccurate throw to wide open Finley on 3rd + 5 early in the 4th quarter, An accurate throw and Finley had a lot of running room – Big missed opportunity in a 20-13 game
I’m thinking the only way to stop Davis is for Smith to overthrow him. Didn’t happen against New Orleans. But Davis will be open.
-The Packers didn’t run much, so we don’t have an idea of how they’ll stop Frank Gore.
