Giant Free Agents: Who To Keep, Who To Let Go?

Free agency is starting soon and the Giants have a number of free agents to think about. Who do they keep? Who should they let go?

Here’s the list:

WR Mario Manningham, offensive linemen Kareem McKenzie, Tony Ugoh, and Stacy Andrews, defensive backs Terrell Thomas, Deon Grant, Derrick Martin, Justin Tryon, and Aaron Ross, defensive linemen Dave Tollefson, Rocky Bernard, and Jimmy Kennedy, punter Steve Weatherford, linebackers Jonathan Goff and Chase Blackburn, quarterback David Carr, kick returner Devin Thomas, and punt returner Will Blackmon.

Well, he’s a Super Bowl hero. But he’s an inconsistent performer. He battled injuries this year, too. Some team is going to overpay him, because they see his skill set, which is elite. But his performance is not. He’s not a consistent week to week player; he doesn’t show up enough. I think, while he was so key in the Super Bowl, and really throughout the playoffs, he’s not worth dishing out number 1 wideout money for.

Stacy Andrews wlll be gone. Tony Ugoh might be a nice guy to keep as a developmental guy. He was a high pick and the Colts LT of the future a little bit ago. McKenzie is a bit harder. He is effective, but he’s getting up there in age. If he goes, what happens to right tackle? Move Diehl there and put Beatty at LT? Draft someone? I wouldn’t mind McKenzie back on a one year deal.

Derrick Martin and Justin Tryon are nice special teamers; they might come back. Terrell Thomas depends on the state of his knee. Second surgery on that knee. Hard to know how he recovers. If he’s healthy, why not, two years ago he was the best Giants corner. But hard to know that now. Deon Grant is interesting too, but with Tyler Sash showing some skill, and the Giants likely to get a middle linebacker, I think Grant will be gone. Aaron Ross is tough too. Horrible regular season, great playoffs. Which Aaron Ross are you paying for? He’s also a guy that might get a lot of money elsewhere. Depends on the health of Thomas.

I would love to see Dave Tollefson back; he’s a great energy pass rusher, an effort guy that, while not supremely talented, gets the job done and can play inside and out. Good special teamers too. Rocky Bernard and Jimmy Kennedy will be gone. Linval Joseph established himself as a nice starter, plus Marvin Austin is coming back. And who are we kidding, it’s the Giants, they are going to draft another lineman.

He’s coming back. Don’t you worry.

Jon Goff depends on health. I really like him, but knee injuries are tricky. Do the Giants try to draft someone like Donta Hightower from Alabama? Sign Curtis Lofton? Hard to tell, and it will depend on his health. As for Blackburn, love the guy, but there’s a reason they didn’t sign him last year. I think he should be back. He’s awesome as a special teamer and he’s an adequate starter at MIKE backer. He’s a fiery guy; the type of guy you win with. But do you already have a guy like him in Mark Herzlich?

David Carr, I don’t think, will get a starting gig anywhere. So he could take this plum gig and re-sign. I wouldn’t be opposed.

Will Blackmon shouldn’t be back. Don’t like him, not very explosive. As for Devin Thomas, he should be. Not a great returner, but an awesome special teamer and can play a little wideout too. Keep him.

I would love to see a dynamic returner added to the roster. I cringed everytime Blackmon touched the football…..

Yeah I agree. Ever since Hixon got hurt I hate to see any of our guys try to return the ball. I pray for a fair catch every time. Hope Thomas comeback strong and we resigned him. I had high hopes for the D this year but with the injuries it killed them. Our secondary would have been fierce with him.

Jeremy – Here are my thoughts, tell me what you think

    Potential Additions:
Through FA – WR Reggie Wayne or Pierre Garcon

    Potential Drops:
    RB Brandon Jacobs (age,perf,money)
    S Deon Grant (age)
    WR Mario Manningham (money)
CB Terrell Thomas (injury, depends on recovery outlook but like him back if healthy)
    DL Rocky Bernard (perf)
    DL Jimmy Kennedy (perf)
    LB Clint Sintim (injury)
    LB Jonathan Goff (injury)
    PR Will Blackmon (perf)
    TE Travis Beckum (injury,perf)

    Potential Resigns:
    LB Chase Blackburn
    P Steve Weatherford
    CB Aaron Ross
OL – Kareem McKenzie (1 year deal due to age)

    Potential Trade Bait:
DL Osi Umenyiora (age, money) – I would only like this idea if 2nd round draft pick can be obtained. Otherwise, Giants should pay the guy to retain him. He deserves it.

Potential Starters – Throw into the starting lineup or just give more playing time:
    CB Prince Amukamara
    DL Marvin Austin
    DT Linval Joseph
    OL Mitch Petrus

    Potential April Draft selections:
TE Dwayne Allen (Clemson) Coby Fleener (Stanford), Michael Egnew (Missouri)

LB Luke Kuechly (Boston College), Vontaze Burfict (Arizona State), Zach Brown (UNC)

OL Peter Konz (Wisconsin), Kelechi Osemele (Iowa State), Lucas Nix (Pitt)

RB Lamar Miller (Univ. of Miami)

CB Cliff Harris (Oregon), Janzen Jackson (Tennesee)

    WR A.J. Jenkins (Illinois)

McKenzie has to go… he’s been pretty bad in pass protection.
