Offseason Preview

We’ve previewed the Giants free agents. Now, let’s see what they need and who they could get to replace them.

NEEDS:

OFFENSIVE LINE:

You could reasonably argue that all positions, other than right guard, need to be upgraded. Let’s start with the premise that Will Beatty will be back at left tackle. Let’s also assume that Kareem McKenzie will not be back. In that case, David Diehl would move to right tackle. So, left guard is the issue. We’ll get into draft previews soon (prospect profiles!). Let’s focus on free agency. Who’s out there for guard? Carl Nicks is the best guard on the market, and will be paid as such; Giants won’t go near him. Ben Grubbs is outstanding and would look awesome in Blue. Montrae Holland was great for Dallas before getting hurt; he should be ready for OTAs. Chilo Rachal is an interesting guy, had a down year and was benched, but has talent. Plenty of guys in the draft too, that we will preview.

MIDDLE LINEBACKER:

They won a Super Bowl playing with two linebackers, but I don’t think that’s sustainable. They need a true middle linebacker. There’s a nice free agent class. Start with Curtis Lofton, who had 147 tackles last season. He’s going to expect a big deal, but is such a good player. Would be worth it. Dan Connor was the backup to Jon Beason, but is a good run stopper. Really need guys, though, that are good in coverage. Stephen Tulloch wouldn’t be bad. He had 111 tackles last season. Barrett Ruud had a down year and is coming off injuries, but is good in coverage. Lofa Tatupu missed all of last year with bad knees; probably should stay away. Channing Crowder is kind of crazy, but a good backer. In the draft, Luke Kelchey is the best, but he’ll be gone. Donta Hightower from Alabama is interesting, but is he a 34 guy? Vontaze Burfict is nasty and physical, but plays too aggressive sometimes. There are options, and of course, Chase Blackburn or Jon Goff could be brought back.

TIGHT END:

With Beckum and Ballard out for at least the first 6 weeks, they need a tight end. Badly. In the draft, there is no stud. Orson Charles from Georgia, Coby Fleener from Stanford, Dwayne Allen of Clemson are good, but not polished. They need someone polished. JerMichael Finley is a free agent, but he’ll be franchised. Martellus Bennett is interesting, has a lot of talent, but not too productive. John Carlson is a guy a lot of people wanted last year; he’s talented but coming off of injury. Bo Scaife has been a good player for a good amount of time; not dynamic, but solid. Not a great class. Trade, perhaps?

WIDE RECEIVER:

Mario Manningham is most likely to be gone. He’s going to have to be replaced. A nice third receiver is in order. Jerricho Cotchery is a nice player, who would be a nice safety valve for Eli. Harry Douglas is an awesome slot receiver, although Atlanta will want him back. Reggie Wayne is a big name, but I don’t think he has a lot left. A guy in the later rounds of the draft wouldn’t hurt.

CORNERBACK:

Aaron Ross will likely not be back. Terrell Thomas is coming off a knee injury. Prince Amukamara is untested. Need depth. Kelvin Hayden wouldn’t be bad. Dimitri Patterson would provide depth. Again, the draft might find more guys.

What do you guys think is the biggest need for the Giants? Who do you want to see in Blue?

  1. CHeeKZ Money says:

in terms of WR, I feel like we need a guy who is a third WR but still goes great on the outside when we go three wide. Honestly, not against Barden and Jerigans getting a chance here.

But if I had to pick, Wayne showed enough to be a number 2 last year. Don’t think he would want long term money. And call me obvious, but I feel like if you like one manning you like both mannings.

CB… Webster, Terrell Thomas, Prince, Justin Tyron. That is a good four. Terrell plays nickel and Prince goes outside.

MLB. The kid from Arizona was suppose to be a top 5 pick. if he falls that far…i want to see hightower in coverage.

    TE: give me Allen.

  2. Jason C. says:

You mention the Packers franchising Finley, which I agree will happen, but what about their backup Quarles, he’s a similar player. What’s his contract situation like? Because he would be a good player to look at.

As far as the WR position I believe #12 will be back, if not, Cotchery is the type of player that would work out just fine here.

  3. jeremy P. says:

Fuchs, why do you say Aaron Ross wont be back? He proved he can play better than Terrel Thomas, albeit for only one season, and besides Ross is our only legitimate (healthy) nickel corner.

I honestly feel Ross is better than TT; I hope we resign him.

    • Jason C. says:

I agree, I do hope we keep TT (shouldn’t take too much to bring him back), but Ross should be resigned as well. I don’t think anyone makes him an astonishing offer, GMs around the league know he’s not going to take their team to another level, he’s a solid corner and will be paid as such. Manningham will be a desperation signing for an organization (Chicago, St.Louis, SanFran, etc.) who’s fans are tired of seeing underachievement by their wide receivers for years going, Ross doesn’t really fit a niche market like that.

  4. giantsfan73 says:

Re the OL, I dont think the Giants need a new LG. Boothe is a very good player. Better than Baas. I think Diehl should stay at LT, move Beatty over to the right.

    • Big Daddy says:

Beatty doesn’t play well on the right side, that was proven already. Some guys can play one side only, some can play one position only and some can play every position. It’s not mix and match, you have to look at what the player can do, it’s reality not some video game or fantasy league.

  5. joe d says:

Lol at arizona lb going top five. Top 5 round maybe… he got benched and his coaches wanted him to leave this draft. Waaaayyy to much risk for top 20 pick. If he is there in the second round ill be ok with it.

  6. rory says:

for o line i think youth in the later rounds is fine. they played decent down the stretch, but they are getting very old.

Burfict would be great at the 32nd pick.

give jernigan and barden a chance at WR, not to mention Hixon will be back

Darius Green out of La. Lafayette looks like an animal at TE. Built like Vernon Davis; long and lean. he could be a steal in the 2nd or 3rd.

  7. Ralph says:

With Nicks and Cruz, plus Eli throwing, we don’t need a great 3rd. Someone that can just catch the ball consistently and run the right routes will be good.

As for CB, Ross is NOT a better corner then TT, I don’t know what you guys are watching. He is a good tackler and can cover some guys but he NEVER makes plays on the ball. TT had has 11 picks in three years and Ross has only had ten in five years. TT is just a better all around player. If Ross comes cheap I would bring him back but not for much more then 1.5 mil. Webster, Thomas, prince, Coe, tryon, bruce Johnson, they will be fine at CB.

I am one of the few that think we don’t need a MLB. They are only on the field for 15-20 plays a game. The NFL is all about passing. You need 3 good safeties more the 3 good LBs. With Boley and Williams as our cover guys, and goff or blackburn in on running downs I think they can be a top 10 D. It’s all about passrush and coverage. I think Osi is the biggest priority, we NEED that pass rush. Also 3rd safety, grant play anymore too slow. Sash isn’t ready either.

    • Mikael R says:

I think our 3rd WR caught the most important catch all season. We need a good but not great #3 WR. Mario had over 800 yards and over 5 tds the last 3 years. He would have had more if he didn’t miss four games this year.

  8. JT_NYGIANTS_FAN says:

Reggie Wayne to NE Patriots? Giants should sign him first so Eli will have even a better year in passing….after MM departs

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1063414-reggie-wayne-hasnt-heard-from-colts-open-to-playing-for-patriots

  9. Jason says:

Vontaze Burfict needs a defensive coordinator like Perry Fewell a Strict Coach like Coughlin together he can become the next Ray Lewis no doubt this is exactly what he need playing time and coaching wheres hes weak at let his emotions play on the field i think the giants should trade up for this guy

  10. Adam Y says:

Im not too concerned about the o-line, 3 or 4 years ago the Giants had one of the best lines in the league and due to age and injuries they diminished.
But dont forget that a few of them were cast offs. O’hara and Seubert were both undrafted rookie free agents, and Mckenzie was a 3rd round pick.

The giants now have some decent young project oline men, Mitch Petrus and James Brewer who might get a shot this year with a full off-season.

Just a short time ago we were talking about how we had no wide recievers after Plax and Toomer left, and then these young players get coached up and contribute, the o-line should be the same, NO flashy free agent picks for the line.

I want to see them pick up a Linebacker or a Safety.

  11. Mikael R says:

I think this is our most important off-season in a long time. I don’t think we need to bring in 11 new guys on the team, but make a few changes and that will take us from 9-7 or 10-6 to 12 wins and better for the next five years. We don’t dominate teams the way we should.

One position that I think we should up grade that wasn’t mention is RB. Giants have I think have the slowest RBs in the NFL, but I think that we can be find one in the second or 1st rd. I love the Lamar Miller from the U, he would be perfect change up with Bradshaw. Allowing us to let Jacobs walk, and use his 4.9 million salary in FAs.

MLB is also important position that I think keeps us from being dominate. Vontaze Burfict ASU is a perfect fit in terms of talent. We need someone that can stay with TE and stop the run, as you can see Chase had to guard Grunk in the Superbowl. Loften fron ATL is a good run stopper, but they take him out on a lot of passing downs, and would want a boat load of money. This isn’t really a good FA class of MLB like last year. Draft might me our best bet, or trade.

We can’t let Mario go with out replacing him. I would love R. Wayne but he’s going to want too much. Garcon his teammate might be a better fit. We need someone with true see, Cruz is quick, Nicks is strong and wide, Mario was the speed. I don’t think the draft is a good place to replace him. WR is a position that need time to grow i.e Cruz and Nicks. Meachem from Saints is also a nice option as well.

OL best guard we can afford in FA’s. pretty simple. Fill in the rest with our current roster, and see whose willing to return at the right price.

TE, is kinda a like the same situation as MLB. We had the slcwest TE in the NFL last year, but with a QB like Eli, your grandmother would look good at TE. A week last in FA, but Allen and Fleener look like day one staters and better then what we had last year. Like the idea of bringing in maybe Shockey ( if his head is right) and drafting one in the 2nd or 3rd. Maybe trade up to draft Fleener with our 3rd pick.
