Accorsi to Mara on Manning: This Kid’s a Winner

Back in the 2004 draft, former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi found his guy. It was then Ole Miss QB Eli Manning. After Accorsi let Jon Elway get out of his grasps when he was the GM of the Colts, he wasn’t about to let that happen again. He was going to get his guy. Here are parts of his memo he sent to John Mara in 2003:

1) HE’S BIG, NEVER GETS RATTLED.

It seems Accorsi was right. Manning seems to never get rattled. The Giants were down 3 with the ball in Manning’s hand in his second super bowl. What does he do? Marches the ball down the field to win the game.

Here are parts of the summary I think are worth noting:

HE HAS A FEEL FOR THE POCKET. FEELS THE RUSH. THROWS THE BALL, TAKES THE HIT, GETS RIGHT BACK UP… HAS COURAGE AND POISE. IN MY OPINION, MOST OF ALL, HE HAS THAT QUALITY THAT YOU CAN’T DEFINE. CALL IT MAGIC. AS [FORMER BALTIMORE COLTS DEFENSIVE BACK] BOBBY BOYD TOLD ME ONCE ABOUT UNITAS, “TWO THINGS SET HIM APART: HIS LEFT TESTICLE AND HIS RIGHT TESTICLE”

After talking about his brother, Peyton Manning, Accorsi says:

BUT I HONESTLY GIVE THIS GUY A CHANCE TO BE BETTER THAN HIS BROTHER. ELI DOESNT GET MUCH HELP FROM THE COACHING STAFF. IF HE COMES OUT EARLY, WE SHOULD MOVE UP TO TAKE HIM.

Accorsi finishes the report of with the following:

THESE GUYS ARE RARE, YOU KNOW. PEOPLE WILL SAY HE ISNT CONFIDENT. PEOPLE WILL SAY HE IS SOCIALLY AWKWARD AND INCAPABLE OF LEADING. THEY ARE WRONG. THIS KID IS A WINNER. LET’S DO WHATEVER WE CAN TO GET HIM. IT WILL BE THE DIFINING MOMENT OF THE FRANCHISE.

It’s gives you chills to think about what Ernie Accorsi wrote before Manning was drafted and how much of what he said came true.

wow if these notes are indeed Accorsi’s he is a genius. I thought they were absolutely crazy for giving up so much for him but ernie knows his stuff.

In the long run it didn’t end up being as much as you would think.
Picks that ended up being Nate Kaeding (a kicker…), Shawne Merriman (once a force, now a shell of his former self), Philip Rivers (headcase, would’ve been Akili Smith status in New York).
My hatred for Philip Rivers makes me smile at his legacy, Eli, the player he was traded for has two Super Bowl rings as well as two SB MVPs. Brees, the player he supplanted, went on to win a ring himself and now holds the record for most yards in a season. Now if only his big target Vincent Jackson is taken away from him, we’ll see the player he really is (the one we saw before VJ came back earlier this season).
But remember the Sporting News Rivers as the #19 player in the league, while Eli didn’t even crack the top 100, and they’re experts, so what do I know?

People will say he is socially awkward?

What kind of scouting report is this, wasn’t he watching a football game?

  3. JW says:

Matt: This was a comprehensive scouting report – Accorsi, who scouted Manning personally, went into all aspects of the person. It makes sense to do so when your picking at #4 and trying to solve your Franchise QB wolves, no?
