Thoughts and Musings

Let us muse.

-Spent the whole weekend doing prospect profiles, so I’m starting to get a really good feel for these prospects.

-Combine is going on. Don’t get too caught up in 4o times and stuff. All that does is force you to go back to your evaluations, go back to film. Guy runs a faster 40 than expected? Go back to film and see if you missed it or if he doesn’t play that way? Guys runs a slower 40 than expected? Go back and see why. That’s all it does. It either confirms your beliefs or makes you go back and see what’s up.

-But you get to learn a lot by watching. Mike Mayock knows pretty much everything and seeing Michael Irvin talk about receivers and how to cut is fascinating. Irvin mentioned that on a comeback route, or a curl route, a DB knows its coming if the wideout starts chopping his feet up and down to slow down and turn. It has to be smooth so the DB doesn’t know. Irvin gets a bad rap as an analyst, but he knows all about receivers.

-Guys will get attention if they run a fast 40, and they’ll start to fly up mock drafts. But I think the adage still applies: NFL guys know more than we do.

-Mario Manningham seems likely to leave. He wants more balls and in Tampa, where he seems to be going, he’ll get that. How do they replace him? Well, I guess the in-house option is Jerrel Jernigan. Has the speed of Manningham, has a year in the offense now. Have to see it, I was a huge fan of him coming out. So we’ll see. Could draft a guy, and we’ll be profiling some guys. In free agency, you could see maybe Robert Meacham, although he might want big money. Harry Douglas is really underrated, and with Atlanta needing to tie up Matt Ryan, might be more inclined to let him go.

-Manningham was key in the playoff, because teams focused on Cruz and Nicks. So someone is going to have to step up, whether that’s in the draft, in free agency, on in house

-I’m not a huge fan of the tight end class. I like Coby Fleener. I’m undecided on Orson Charles and Dwayne Allen. But the need is huge, because you just don’t know with Beckum and Ballard and their knees. John Carlson is a free agent and might be a nice target. They have a blocker in Pascoe. Although don’t be surprised if they stick with Pascoe. That’s a Giant thing to do.

-Does Jacobs go? Not sure. There’s no running back like Brandon Jacobs out there. No one with his size. The running backs in the draft class are small. Some are between the tackles guys, like Terrence Ganaway of Baylor

-Rap interlude: Think I might start to feature some awesome rap in T and M. Here’s “Yesterday” by Atmosphere (a little NSFW.  But awesome)

-Depth at corner is needed. Would they spend a high pick on that? Don’t be surprised.

-The three safety look was not a stroke of genius by Perry Fewell. It was not designed to stop the high octane offenses. It was done out of necessity. There were no adequate linebackers and this was all he could do. But it kinda worked. And they might not abandon it, because they won a title with it. But Deon Grant needs to be replaced. And not necessarily with a safety. Could be with one of those LB/S tweeners. Zach Brown? Lavonte David? Sean Spence (all guys have or will be profiled). It could work. The MLB class isn’t great, but the OLB class is much better. These guys are weakside guys who can really run and cover, but aren’t big enough or strong enough to be thumpers against the run. It might work.

Yeah there is no way Mario comes back. Hope we can work something out with Jacobs (I just personally like him) Thomas and Cruz. I know Cruz has a year left but will the Giants give him an extension he will be happy with or will they try to trade him?

Love Brother Ali and Atmosphere. If you want some others to check out listen to El-P, Company flow (has EL-P in it), Cannibal Ox (the cold vein one of the best albums ever), Cunninlynguists (from my home state KY, listen to Dirty Acres first) Blueprint, Grieves, Murs, Felt (Murs and Slug from atmosphere listen to their 1st 2 albums the 3rd was a miss)

Excellent Hip-hop interlude; Atmosphere is dope. I applaud you, Fuchs. As a matter of fact most of the rappers on the Ryhmslayers record label are exceptional including Grieves and Brother Ali.
