Friday’s game.

I must say first and foremost to Mr. Goodell, get those referees back ASAP!!!! Like NOW!!!! I could not believe these guys did not know the game was over. Overall the Refs did a poor and unprofessional job. When the games are for real their calls will mean the difference between a win or a loss. This level of performance will be unacceptable.

Overall the Giants played a good game, the starters looked good. The Giants look like a 10-6 team unless they get some people back and others step up. The team they played is a scrub team that might be bad enough to go 4-12 or worse. The key player is…….Beatty, not Terrell Thomas. That offensive line needs help. Snee does not look like the old Snee, it’s time that the Giants look to replace him unless he steps up and has a comeback year. He looks old and slow and does not have the power and explosiveness he had a few years ago. Baas looks good, Boothe looks OK, the tackles look slightly below average. This Oline is going to have issues all season unless Beatty comes back and someone takes the ROT spot, Diehl is not the answer. The right side looks awful.

I was also disappointed with Petrus’s play against the Jags second unit, he usually plays the left side, he was playing against the second unit in Snee’s place on the right. Petrus should have dominated his man, he did not. Petrus did look bigger and stronger though. Locklear was having problems with the rush and the line was not blowing anybody off the LOS on run plays. Although the Jags knew what was coming and where ready, still there wasn’t even a crease for Bradshaw and no push, nobody was in the second level, the Jag do not have a top 10 defense. I’d rather have Locklear at his more natural ROT position and Beatty back at LOT. Cordle looked OK at center from what I could tell, he looked to have good size.

The Giants need to stop fooling around and have some high priority draft and/or free agent offensive lineman next season. They got away with it and now it’s not working anymore, it needs to be revamped. We can’t rely on Beatty even though when healthy he’s a top LOT, he’s never healthy. We’ll see if this starting unit improves against the Jets next week. They must start to show some dominance and explosiveness. Mosley has some talent I wish they would leave him at the ROT but the Giants want their offensive lineman to be able to play multiple positions, in my opinion it stops them from developing. I think if they just leave Mosley at ROT he will win the job. McCants is not ready, I think they want Brewer to step up and take the ROT spot but he’s not and Mosley is the guy. Come on Tom stop the BS, what are you doing?

I think Carr proved he can play if anything happens to Eli, I never doubted it. David Wilson looks stronger than he did in college. He will be a big part of the offense moving forward, he looks really fast. Ware looked good, he looks more explosive than he has in the past. Ware does not waste motion and is a solid professional with good instincts for the NFL style of running. Andre Brown does not have what it takes to play in the NFL, he made very poor decisions and is still more of a college runner. Bradshaw did not look that good, maybe it was the poor blocking, to me he was not accelerating well. He needs more snaps to get his jets right and the rust off. I was down on Ware but he looked better than last year, Brown just does not have the instincts to be a quality NFL back. Did Scott get any snaps? If he did I missed it. I would like to see if this guy can play. Martinek looked good blocking and catching a pass, I think if given a chance he will beat out Brown for a roster spot, he can play FB and HB.

The receivers where no surprise to me, I have said Barden and Jernigan just plain and simple are not good, in fact they suck. Barden got open once, the other plays he could not get any separation as usual. Same old story with Barden, it’s time to move on and give his snaps to another player. Jernigan does not have the physicality to play in the NFL, he should have caught that TD pass. Jernigan was a really good college player but cannot transition into the NFL unless he hits the weight room and gets much stronger, it is too early to give up on him though. Seriously he’s not ready even to return kicks/punts. He is fast but does not play fast, some players do not run fast, they have what’s called functional football speed. Jernigan runs pretty fast but does not have good NFL functional speed. Randle does not run as fast as Jernigan but has great function speed he will be a top receiver in the NFL.

I was impressed with Cruz, he’s a dangerous player that must be double teamed, he can take it home on any play. Cruz is NOT a one year wonder, he’s one of the most dangerous receivers in the NFL. I liked the way Randle executed, I need to see more and hope he is the starter next week over the useless Barden. It seems like almost everybody caught a pass during the game. Some made great catches or the way they made the catch seemed to say I belong in the NFL. It’s about technique and execution, having that certain intangible like Cruz has. I see it in other players like Randle, Stanback who looks good but has been derailed by injuries all through his career. DePalma caught one and Talley caught two passes.

Barden and Jernigan have been here long enough and still look and play like rookies. I hope after reviewing the film of the game the coaches change things and give some of the other players more reps. We’ll see next game if they finally give up on Barden who obviously I am really down on. I hope they eventually just release him if Reese cannot trade him by the last cuts. There’s too much competition and talent to waste a roster spot on him.

I was also impressed with Bennett, I can’t wait for the Dallas game. I hope he does not get nervous and he just sticks it to them. He looks as big as the offensive tackles and can run. Bennett will be one of Eli’s main targets, especially in the red zone, I’m sure of that. Nicks, Cruz and Bennett plus whoever else steps up, this is the strength of the offense. I know Randle will step up, I can see it. I picked Talley earlier, before camp, I still think he will slowly creep up the depth chart and make the roster. Bear made some good blocks, Donnell did nothing and I didn’t see much of any other TE.

Give Talley a chance I think he has the ability to play and be successful in the NFL. I don’t think he will ever be as good as Cruz but he can contribute and make plays consistently. Douglas, DePalma, Stanback and Talley have NFL talent, I have not seen enough of Collins yet. That is the key, to be consistent. That’s what gets you playing time, that’s why Coughlin likes his veterans. You cannot win football games with players that are sometimes good, sometimes not, sometimes great. I did not see Hixon play, is he hurt? I know Douglas was out, I don’t know why, I hope it’s not serious. The Giants really need Hixon back there for returns.

The Special teams looked better except for the returns. Doesn’t anybody know how to catch the ball? This is something that has to be worked on and somebody must step up and show they can consistently catch the ball, make the right call and be able to break it for a long gain. I would gladly be happy with 2 out of 3 right now. Zak DeOssie was running down and making plays like his old self, that’s great. The young players looked like they were blocking and tackling better than last year. Weatherford looked great and Tynes except for one kick looked stronger. I think he kicked one ball out of the end zone and I have never seen him do that.

The defense did not look good in some cases, although as always they can get to the passer. JPP, Tuck Osi, Joseph all looked good and there are no worries with their play. Rogers was disappointing, he looked sluggish and was sealed off many times, he was having trouble with double teams. He also over committing himself and was sealed making a nice running lane. Was he free lancing or doing what was schemed, I think he was free lancing, as the game continued he got better and played more disciplined. Rogers needs to get into better shape to make any impact.

Austin had a bad start but came on. He had some problems with double teams, one on one he dominated the player in front of him. I think by the start of the season he will be playing much better and making plays. Hendricks had a good game and I think he is ready to have a roster spot and see playing time, he did a good job. Kuhn looks more like a DE, he plays too high for a DT, maybe he should take some weight off and move to DE, he’s raw and needs a lot of work on his technique.

Tracy looked like he had a good game, in reality he did not. His play was deceiving, when allowed he made plays because nobody was on him. When it came time to make an important play he looked bad and allowed the runner to score. He did not have good technique and missed his gap responsibilities making a simple but inexcusable error with nobody even on him. Maybe he’s better on the left side than the right side, he needs more time. Players look great when they’re not blocked, you can tell if they are good when and if they have to make a play and don’t, he didn’t. I think Marshall has more potential as a DE. The other defensive lineman did not make any impact during the game, although Broha made some plays late one on a stunt with the DT.

Mark Herzlich needs more snaps, he over ran some plays because he has such good quickness. He is clearly the better athlete and should be the starting MIKE. Sorry to say Chase looked slow and could not make plays, it’s time to decide to keep him on the roster because of the need for veteran depth or let him go. Jones played well too and looked much better at the MIKE, he’s a natural MLB for the Tampa 2 defense. I would be OK so far going into the season with Herzlich as the starter and Jones backing him up. Rivers looks like a great athlete but doesn’t yet know the defense. I think once he’s comfortable he’ll be fine and making plays. Boley was missed not being there. Paysinger looked a little lost as did most of the second and third unit players except for a few that had good games.

The second team secondary looked lost, dazed and confused. You have to look at the mistakes and see what is correctable and what isn’t. The issue Prince had was something he could get away with in college and cannot in NFL. I don’t think you’ll see him try to do that again. What he did was to try and peek at the QB, when he did that the receiver turned it on, pulled away and made the catch. He actually had excellent coverage until he tried to cheat and look at the QB. He has to concentrate on the receiver and if he can see the QB it has to be with his peripheral vision. It’s a feel thing and it’s just a matter of adjusting to the NFL, he needs more time on the field playing to work on his techniques and timing. He has to get to know all the receivers he will be facing in the NFL, Prince has all the tools and skills. I have confidence in him as I do with Hosley who obviously belongs in NFL and will be an outstanding CB, maybe not so much a returnman. We have four quality defensive backs and Coe is not bad, it’s a pretty good group especially when TT comes back. There might be some growing pains, the coaches and fans have to be patient with the young players. Rolle is just not that good in the slot and the coaches should give Hosley a chance there.

Will Hill can play, period, get him in there and see if he can play the SS in the regular defense. Tyron might be gone, he had a terrible game and looks lost out there. There were so many players in and out I lost track. Some just did not play well, I really would need to have access to tape of the game and go over what their assignments where and which player did what. Whatever it was a lot of them will not be with the team. The players in the secondary I have a good feeling about so far are Hill, Hosley and Prince. I do not know why the Giants are playing Janzen Jackson as a CB, he’s a safety. I need to see more of Horton, Nicolas, Molden, Brown and Jackson at safety not CB.

The only group I am worried about is the offensive line. All the other positions are deep and talented. I have a lot of confidence in some players that have not yet flashed. It’s all about consistency, improving individual play and team play as well as staying healthy. I see a 10-6 record unless the offensive line plays better. Eli will have another great passing season especially with the addition of Bennett and Randle. It’s the run game I am worried about. The Jets are going to get their butts kicked next week. I’m looking forward to seeing players that I did not get a chance to this game. I have given up on Barden, if he hasn’t figured it out by now he never will.

on Barden i dont think his gonna make it as a WR for us, although maybe we could try only using him in the Red Zone.

given his size maybe we could try to convert him to a TE but that would take some work but we are lacking depth there at the moment.

    • Big Daddy says:

I think he should be converted to another team. It’s personal with this guy, I scouted him, found him and let people in the internet draft world know about him. I picked the Giants to draft him in the correct round 6 months before that draft.

So I had high hopes for this guy. I saw the potential as I still see it. It drives me crazy to watch this guy try unsuccessfully get off the LOS.

So it’s kind of like this was my find and I was right about his talent. I could not have known about his lack of heart or whatever his problem is. He’s a smart person, is it the Giants coaching?

Is he going to end up with a team like the Cowboys and have a perennial probowl career after leaving the Giants?

  2. big blue says:

how can you make any accusation about the team after the first PRESEASON game

    • Big Daddy says:

These players have been here for many years. Most of the young players I have studied well before they where drafted by the Giants.

These players are not new to me. I have also listened to what they have to say and I quote Snee, something like this “I can’t lift the same weight I used to”, well what does that say? He does not posses the same strength he did before and it showed this last game. he used to maul other players and get into the second level. He cannot do this anymore.

If you want anything more specific just ask about any player. That’s what I have been doing since I started writing here, dissecting, studying and learning about every Giant player and coach. There’s a lot more to learn, but I have a base of information I can use.

I have been watching the Giants for 50 years.

      • kyle says:

When you really look at Beatty, he has had no career ending injury. The eye thing was a freak injury. I knew him from uconn and Uconn didn’t let him stay squat, after he had pain with his back after squatting. Giants had to know that. I agree Beatty will be the key to the new York giants line.u

        • Big Daddy says:

Even though the eye was a freak accident that’s what injury prone means to some extent. Add that to the other things and it adds up. The back worries me, but other players have had good careers with back issues, Joesph has one also.

It’s how it’s managed by the team. Honestly the key to having a good base is doing squats, a lineman needs to do squats. There was a guy on the Chargers that had some good years. Marcus McNeill played from 2006-2011, he should have gone first round, they got him in the second because of the back. Short career but a probowl player.

I think you have to look at Beatty and just say what you get you get and move on. Next draft there will be plenty of tackles to go in the first round and there will be one for the Giants. I know Reese wants to go pass rusher but he should go tackle. There are some great potential rushers all the way throughout the draft. We need a franchise LOT and you usually only find them in round one.

        • Sam says:

Beatty said he hurt himself doing olympic style lifting. He said that he doing power cleans not squats

          • Big Daddy says:

Those are tough on your back too. There are two types, one I could never do. The clean and jerk I could do the snatch I always had trouble with……OK you guys with dirty minds stop laughing.

The snatch is where you get the weight over your head but you are SQUATTING. So maybe that’s what he meant, during the squat part. Once you are squatting you raise your body and stand, the weight is extended with your arms over your head while you do this. It’s a very difficult movement.

  3. Russo757 says:

We must have watched different games. I thought the defense looked aweful. First string included. They got completely dominated on the first few drives. The only saving grace was the two fumbles. Take those away and the point spread would have been way different.

I hope I’m wrong but price looks like a bust as a first round pick. He got owned on that 3rd and goal and routinely seems lost or beat. The secondary just looks bad and the line wasn’t getting the pressure needed to force quick passes.

The best upgrade of the year will be Bennett. He looked solid. He was moving people around at will and he can catch. I’m excited to see what he can do. Wilson too is a beast. He maybe getting the first team snaps by the end of the year. Jerrigan didn’t have a dominating game but he was clearly held on that dropped end zone pass. For all the hype talked about Randel he wasn’t open much. I think he made two catches all game. One for a TD.

I know it’s preseason but the giants have a good amount of work to do moving forward.

    • Big Daddy says:

It’s all about things that are correctable and things that are not.

I think most things we saw wrong are correctable. I love Chase, honestly he’s not a quality MIKE, he doesn’t move fast enough for Fewell’s schemes.

Prince will be a top CB, he has to forget what he did in college and concentrate on the pro game. Something Barden has not done and some other Giants too. It takes time and reps to re-learn and do something different than you have been doing a long time. If Prince is still toast by the start of the season you would have to start talking bust.

Honestly I didn’t like the pick all that much. He’s not an instinctive player, Hosley is. Hosley does not have the talent of Prince but IMO is a better football player.

      • Russo757 says:

I wasn’t that disappointed with Rogers play. The was fairly disruptive but spent most the game double teamed. As a huge man he needs to expect that he is going to get doubled and adapt but he is a big boy and I think can be a force once he gets his groove. Linebackers gave up huge runs and the secondary couldn’t get the d off the field on multiple 3rd and longs. I watched the game again And Randell really wasn’t target much. I was hoping to see him burn a few defenders.
People I didn’t see where Canty,Boley, daRel Scott, and hixon. I’d like to see if Scott can start on the roster. My guess is Andre brown is getting cut and we will have Bradshaw,Wilson, ware and Scott. That’s a lot of speed backs. Would like another bruiser on board.

I think the areas of concern is LB, CB/SS,online,

Bennett is going to do big things this year. Mark my words. Ansd Wilson will end the season as the starter.
Add Teo to the LB corps next year and draft online/db and they should look stout again

    • Jason C. says:

That non-call on the pass to Jernigan in the end zone was so bad that IMO it almost overshadowed the tomfoolery at the end of the game (almost). I was looking forward to the replacement refs, as the regs (ex. Bill Levy in the GB Playoff game) never were too kind on the G-men, but boy was I wrong.

      • Big Daddy says:

I was able to get a replay on youtube. At first I thought it was pass interference. On looking at the tape it wasn’t, I looked at it a few times. It was Jernigan’s fault, he tried for some reason to make a one handed grab and brought his right hand up late. By the time he had the ball in his left hand the DB was grabbing his right forearm.

Unless I am wrong and he was holding him before the ball was there. I thought so at first but the film doesn’t show that and Banks did not mention it during the game which surprised me until I looked at the film.

This was poor technique and execution on Jernigan’s part. Had he used proper technique it would have been a TD. Had he been stronger it would have been a TD. This guy is NOT a player. He still is in college mode and I do not think he can break out of it. Hopefully Prince can because he too suffers from that as well as Andre Brown.

The NFL game is different and unless these guys make the transition they will fail. One is to get stronger which I see a lot of guys have done. Two is to learn the proper techniques for your position which I see a lot of guys have NOT done, yet. Three is to learn the playbook.

Coughlin alluded to some of these things by saying that so many guys did not know what they were doing on the field.

        • Big Daddy says:

Now that I have the game replays, it was PASS interference 100%. He held Jernigan’s right forearm with his left hand. But it shows physical weakness by Jernigan.

  4. Jason C. says:

Highs: interior D-line (Hendricks!), Herzlich, Bennett, Wilson, ST coverage, pass rush
Lows: OLB (WAY too many successful runs to the outside), soft cover play (looking at you Prince), muffed punts, holes in the O-line

    Notes:
-Hosley may have been the best player on the field for some of the game, but that muffed punt completely ruins whatever else he did.
-Hendricks should get some earlier PT next week just to see how he can handle a first team offense (well the Jets don’t really have a 1st team, but it’s what we have to work with).
-Some good young WR play, unfortunately one of the kids loses a roster spot because Barden is all but locked in, pretty sad really.
-Losing doesn’t matter, but really shouldn’t have happened and that is something that will be looked at.

    • Big Daddy says:

A lot of pople said Herzlich sucked. I saw some things that need correcting but he looked good, quick, active and looking to make plays. I think the Jags specifically took him out of plays. Not many others stepped up and made plays. Yeah Hendricks looked good.

There’s a bunch of guys who I want to see more of.

I read Barden stunk it up in camp Sunday, I’m shocked.

Unfortunately Chase did too, he cannot cover, he’s too slow. He’s not going to make it and will be cut with Herzlich and Jones ready now.

Prince has to wake up, this is not college. He will but honestly I think Hosley is a better football player. More instinctive.

      • Jason C. says:

Not going to say Herzlich had a perfect game, but he made plays that I’m pretty sure nobody else on the roster could make, there’s an upside there that I feel will be reached as the season progresses. However, I think Chase stays with the team as he’s proved he can step in when needed. Paysinger hasn’t shown much since last offseason, I don’t think he makes the team. On the LB front, any news AT ALL on Sintim??

        • Big Daddy says:

I’m still studying the first half. Herzlich made some plays, Chase many times was out of the play completely. Osi was suckered as ususal into overcommiting himself and it went for a big gain.

Hendricks and eventually Austin played well. Rogers did not have a good game.

  5. Russo757 says:

Just read on NFL.com that Rogers has a blood clot in his leg. Maybe why he was dragging ass. He maybe out for quite some time. Also, Austin is beeing seen by doctors for a back issue. Looking like DT depth is thinning out and quick.

Also, I’m a big Osi fan. I love how disruptive he is in the backfield. But I did notice he was out of position on a number of runs giving up a big gain. 3 i think to be exact. I wont count one against him because I think Blackburn slammed into him knocking him down. That didnt cause the runner to hit the outside, but Chase should have filled that outside lane instead of running up Osi’s behind.

I paid to get all preseason games so I’m going to go back and watch some more to see all the ins and outs. Is that what you were referring to on your other post or is there a different site with different angles? If so send me a link because I’m interested.I dont recall seeing Canty or Scott get any play time last week.

    • Big Daddy says:

Canty is out for a while. Maybe not back until into the season.

      Scott should be back.

Rogers might be out period. A blood clot could mean anything and if he has to go on blood thinners he’s out!!

Yeah Osi was out of position but Chase was bad, I am watching right now and it’s painful to even write how bad he is playing.

I think we have the same thing, it’s only offered by the NFL.

I have the season games that give you all 22, that comes after the games are played and I don’t think they offer it for preseason.

The cool thing with this is that I can back or forward 10 seconds and keep on watching the play over and over again. With this I might just get sick of football after this season…ha ha.
