It was hard to watch the game, I guess I am getting spoiled being able to move the time back and forth and eliminate the stupid commentary because I have NFL games online. It was a Jet game, the view was from the Jets standpoint, they mostly talked about how bad the Jets are. And they looked bad. Their defense is going to win them a few games but their offense is terrible. They have nobody to throw to and there are holes in the offensive line. Just too many holes in the whole team top to bottom, their punter is going to lose them some games.

They were a good team under Mangini and have regressed a lot. I’m picking the jets to go 4-12 and cleaning house after the season. They have not developed any players and this whole Tebow thing is ridiculous. Tim Tebow has everything you need to be a great football player, to be a great quarterback you need something Tebow does not have. An NFL QB must have a strong accurate arm, accuracy is more important than overall strength. There are throws a NFL QB must make, Tebow cannot make those throws. His arm strength is not good enough for the NFL and he is not accurate enough. So the Jets have wasted draft picks and time, now onto the Giants.

On the first play Blackburn just comeptlely missed the play, Kiwi filled the hole and stopped a huge run, it came back because of a penalty. I think Herzlich hurt his hip, Giants are falling again. This was another game that the officials where terrible on all counts. They missed a lot of calls, some were obvious, plus they were confused a lot. They missed two pass interference calls, one was with Cruz in the endzone. The DB did not turn his head to the ball and made contact, that’s pass interference, he mugged him and then turned his head. If these are the guys that are going to be working during the regular season there are going to be a lot of games won and lost because of the zebras.

On to my new favorite target, Barden is useless, he cannot get open, he has no technique, I am sick of him, just please go away. I hope the Giants don’t hold onto him and let one of these young players go. Jernigan played better but it was against the scrubs, even so he showed something. Like I said he has talent but has not shown improvement, this game he has and that is a good sign.

You can see who is starting to play well, the cream always rises to the top. David Diehl continues to be below average as a blocker. DeVito just manhandled him all game, it’s getting painful to watch him. On another play I never saw this before, a Jet just drove Snee back. Unless these guys regain something this is going to have to be a pass happy team, they will not be able to run the ball. There is so much talent on this team the Giants can win with this offensive line, just maybe win another super bowl if everybody stays healthy. Beatty must get back and someone has to claim that ROT spot. Ware could not get a hole to run through. That offensive line gets no push at all and there is no crease or seam, nothing.

The good, the bad and the ugly.

Good: Defensive line, everybody played pretty well, it’s deep even with the injuries and the starters are the best in the NFL. I think the Giants have some sleepers in Marshall and maybe Tracy & Kuhn, Hendricks and even Broha. A few guys will make the practice squad too. So as usual this group will make or break the team in terms of success.

Good: Some of the linebackers look good, Rivers looks good enough to take over for Boley so that Boley can move to the MIKE if he has to. Kiwi seems to find the hole and fill it, he has great lateral movement and good football instincts. The others seem to have some talent too, some have to get healthy. Herzlich is hurt I hope it’s not bad he was winning the battle for the middle linebacker position.

Good: Eli and Carr, best 1-2 QB tandem in the NFL. Carr never looked better.

Good: Running backs, too bad they can’t get a hole. Brown ran better than last week, Ware got no help but ran well. Wilson looks dangerous, like he can break it for a TD every time he touches the ball. Hynoski can be the short yardage back, he ran well in college, they just have to give him a chance. Martinek is going to make this team and be more than just a backup RB/FB, he can run, catch and block. Scott had a nice run, I want to see more of him, he did pick up a blitzer but the other one made the hit, not his fault, his blocking has improved and the coaches will see this on the tape.

Good: Prince had a much better game and is showing aggression and confidence, something a DB MUST have, he’s going to make plays in the run game and pass game. Hosley has skills and will be a really important part of the defense especially in the Nickel packages, he covers better than Rolle. Hill looks pretty good, hard hitter and is playing well. Rolle, KP and Webster are as good as ever and KP looks 100% for the first time since early in his rookie year, of course it’s his contract year.

Good: Cruz is in mid-season form, Hixon looks like he’s back, Randle looks good, he’s smooth, Jernigan had a much better game still has to improve though. Stanback had moments, Douglas caught a very difficult pass. I wanted to see more of Talley and Collins, I guess next game.

Good: Tynes looks better than ever and his leg is so much stronger, Weatherford is fine. DeOssie looks healthy.
Bad: Blackburn played a bit better but he is just too slow and does not diagnose plays well. He’s always somewhere away from the ball, like if the ball goes left he’s going right. Although he did make a few plays he still looks like he has no instinctive football ability especially in pass coverage. If he has to be the starting MIKE every TE will have a career day.

Bad: Special teams play, the Jets looked like they were close to blocking every punt and the return blocking needs work too.

Bad: All the tightends seem to have had trouble blocking, Bennett had a tough time with Bart Scott, they were going up against some of the best 3-4 linebackers in football though. Bennett has to learn to get lower and use a better base. They need more time with the offensive line, right now they are blowing assignments because there is not enough cohesion. One player does not yet know what the other is going to do on the offensive line as well as the TE. In the Giants scheme it is very important the TE knows who to block. Right now people are blocking the same man and missing others. I’m not talking about double teams, there is some confusion on their assignments with the TE and offensive line.

Bad: Baas, Boothe and Locklear had some problems blocking on run plays, they must get better and work together more. I think they will improve as they get more time together. Beatty please get healthy

Ugly: I know this is redundant but Ramses Barden’s play is horrendous, he must be cut, traded, kidnapped and sent to Afghanistan to entertain the troops as a circus clown, as long as he’s gone I’ll be happy.

Ugly: David Diehl looks terrible, I was hoping he would play better he didn’t he was worse. Snee also looked really bad, he’s not even close to the probowl player of a few seasons ago although he did pull well. The whole offensive line looks bad but both bring it down even more. This line cannot run block. Coughlin must be on the phone with Reese yelling “HELP!!!” Reese must be looking for help but the Giants are limited with cap space. Some moves might have to be made. Can we get a 7th round pick for Barden just to relieve some cap space?

Ugly: As usual the injuries are racking up, what is it with this team? I wonder if every team has this many injuries. This year it’s the back, hips and hammy’s, last year it was knees.

I think this is a 10-6 team, they are going to have problems running the ball and if teams learn to exploit that the Giants could end up 8-8. The offensive line has no push and rarely even makes a seam for the runner. One of the biggest issues I see is that they need more time together, many times they are blocking the same man and missing an unblocked player who makes the tackle. This was very evident on more complex blocking schemes the Giants like to use, like pulling guards. Snee can still move and is very good at pulling from his spot and leading the play like a fullback. For that to be effective the players must work together and that takes time.

The Giants have some great receivers and everybody including the TEs and RBs can catch the ball very well. I expect the Giants to have to use the pass to set up the run. It worked in the past for the Giants and many other teams as well who won super bowls with pass first offenses. Jerry Reese if you are listening, next season I know you want to get some pass rushers but really this team desperately needs offensive lineman. Not projects, not prospects, proven NFL quality players or can’t miss draftees like first round franchise left tackles or huge road grading guards.

Geez Big Daddy, you sound just like I would sound in my critique. I guess we’re seeing the same thing. Great observations, Big Guy! I too, want to see Barden in some other realm. Goodbye, Ramses, we hate to see you go.

Big concerns continue with the OL. The only thing you didn’t mention although I’m sure you saw it, was besides Snee’s and Diehl’s lack of push, Baas is likewise not getting initial thrust as well. I hope that we use next year’s draft to take two DBs and five or more offensive linemen. The OL is by far our biggest Achilles heel.

    Doc

    • Big Daddy says:

I said that Baas is also having issues in the bad, but it’s not ugly.

I wish I didn’t have to keep saying the same things but that’s what I see.

Now Hosley has turf toe, what is up with these injuries.

Bad beds, bad shoes, bad hip pads, this team has too many injuries. Hosley looks like he might have hurt his toe and the TD run, he skipped into the endzone and it looked like he caught his toe.

Another player that is going to be cut is Tyron, he can’t cover anybody.

      • ArthuroMolenda says:

I happened to watch 2 games this summer where Tryon played (with IND). He was benched vs JAX, hardly a powerful passing offense, but pratically shut down Bryant when they played DAL.

        Not the most consistent fellow.

  2. ArthuroMolenda says:

I try not to analyse preseason games as they are just that, preseason games.

Still, a few thigs I noticed (I only watched the 1st half).

It seems like Amukamara was beat twice on the same play at the beginning of the game, he was “saved” by a sack of Sanchez, kinda like Ross was “saved” vs Green Bay.
Amukarama drops back way too much, then tries to recover and is beat again when the WR finally goes downfield.
Admittadly I’m no DB coach but this looked awful live.

The OL is as bad as I thought it’d be.

The DT looked better than I thought they would, and that Jets OL is pretty good in the middle. Can they play like this in real games ? Over 800 snaps ?

Rolle and Phillips look good when they can really play safety.

I’m worried about the 3rd WR spot, although this being preseason and all … tough to judge the passing game.

I think the best 1-2 QB in the league is in Dallas btw.

    • Vincent Blasi says:

Kyle Orton may well be the best back-up quarterback in the NFL. But for Dallas to have the best 1-2 quarterback tandem in the NFL, or even to have a better tandem than the Giants, their backup would have to be the best backup QB in history (and even that might not be good enough)to compensate for the shortcomings of their no. 1 guy, shortcomings that surface year after year whenever it’s time to step up. Poise, intelligence, and judgment matter in a QB, quite a bit more than a quick release or a scratch handicap at golf.

  3. Jason C. says:

I wouldn’t send Ramses to Afghanistan, maybe just dump him in a cold tub (too soon?)

  4. giantsfan73 says:

LOL dying at the Barden comment!!!

Great article… I look forward to your recaps every week, they’re the best out there because unlike 99% of recaps, they actually mention specifics…

  5. giantsfan73 says:

Really concerned about the line. I was watching Pittsburgh last night and their backups were finding holes in what has for the last few years been a bad line. The Giants backs literally have no holes to run through, it’s terrible. How can you evaluate runners like Ware, Wilson, Brown, Scott… if they get hit as soon as they get the handoff.

I love Reese but in his entire tenure as GM I believe he has only made one high draft pick of an offensive lineman, Will Beatty in 2008 in the 2nd round… and it looks like that is coming back to haunt us….

I think you are right that the Giants will just pass the whole time to set up the run. I don’t like that style but it’s better than a bunch of 1-yard gains.

  6. Big Daddy says:

2 things, we have to give them some time and hope Killdrive understands this and devises something to overcome. If they don’t get it together and Killdrive doesn’t make adjustments this team is 8-8.

You can’t blame Reese, if Beatty was OK this whole issue would be moot. The Oline would be a lot better with a healthy Beatty, it’s like dominoes. Once Beatty went down locklear had to shift to LOT. With Beatty at LOT and Locklear possibly at ROT this line would be a lot better.

I still have hope Mosley takes the ROT spot and excels there. He has the size and ability, plus as I have said he is well versed in these schemes. It is exactly the same schemes he used in college. Of course the Giants version is more complex but most of it is the same, especially the little wrinkles they use with the TE and ROT.

Petrus has been disapointing, I had hoped he would be much better by now. This was his year to prove himself and he’s not.

  7. Big Daddy says:

And the thought that Tony Romo is better than Eli makes me want to upchuck. He’s good but does not have the poise in the pocket and cannot make the throws under pressure that Eli has.

NOBODY in the NFL at QB has the poise under pressure and ability to pull out a close game that Eli Manning does. He has two superbowl MVP awards to prove it. Also so many 4th quarter comebacks in the regular season.

    What does Romo have?

As to David Carr watch him in those early Texan games, he could have been a top notch QB had Casserly gotten him an OLine. The niners made a huge mistake not resigning him, he’s much better than Smith. He had some issues that he is over. The Giants know what they have in Carr and are glad and lucky to have him.

Backup QBs do more than stand there with a clip board. They have many responsibilities to help game planning and making sure certain things are right. I’m sure he does that well.

    • ArthuroMolenda says:

To be clear, I never said Romo is better than Manning … To be honest I think this choker reputation of his is not entirely deserved, his numbers are impressive late in games and he gets DAL more W than he blows leads …

      I think they are close.

But Orton is 10 times the playing QB Carr is. As far as film study and sparing as the opposite QB, I don’t think any of us can compare.

      • Jason C. says:

Romo has impressive come from behind wins? The problem with Romo is how he started and ended the year, in NY (vs. the Jets to start, the Giants to end), on the big stage, his team failed to deliver in the 4th quarter. In a must win vs. the Giants earlier in the season he choked. Against the 49ers he choked. So he came up with some clutch wins against the Dolphins, Cardinals and Redskins and we’re supposed to be impressed?? He’s a talented kid, but when it comes down to getting it done, he just doesn’t have it.
And as far as Orton goes, he lost his job to Tebow (yes, there were special circumstances, but his ineffectiveness was the overall deciding factor), and we just saw how good Tebow is. Carr lost his job in Houston perhaps due to playing behind some of the worst offensive lines in the history of the NFL, he still has something to show.
I would take Manning/Carr over Romo/Orton any day, I’d probably take a lot more teams 1/2 as well.

  8. Russo757 says:

Just rewatched the game and had a few key ins.
    1. Hendricks was getting pushed all over the field and on quite a few plays so was Bernard. Not a lot of push from the DTs.
    2. Blackburn looked lost in coverage on a few occasions. Looks like a general issue with LB corps. You would see all three LBs look to one receiver and forget about the TE up the middle. They also did a poor job on the run. They seemed to just all run at the pile instead of the lanes for clean hits.
    3. O line issues look more like mental mistakes than them getting out muscled. Saw a few plays where Locklear would double and leave his assignment to fly by.

Preseason ticket is awesome. the ability to re-watch plays over and over is priceless. Wish this was available for reg season games.

  9. Jason C. says:

I think the key to this defense is keeping aggressive in the secondary. The front four is good enough to get to the QB, and even if a DB loses his guy in coverage, as long as the QB isn’t able to see something early enough to get the ball out he should end up flat on his ass 2 out of 3 times. Of course with Rodgers, Ben, Vick, Bob Griff and Cam on the schedule this year, there will have to be a few adjustments, but overall I’d rather see our DB’s make mistakes being too aggressive than playing soft coverage and allowing 7 yard passes all day.

    • Russo757 says:

Well Gabbert has his way with the first string defense. The two fumbles were saving graces because they were driving hard on both.
That’s a scary thing when Blane drives down at will without MjD against the giants 1st string D

      • Jason C. says:

Yeah, Prince played SOFT coverage in the first game, much more aggressively in the second, you see the difference there. Giants DB’s played aggressive vs. SF in the playoffs too, held their WR’s to ONE catch, sure they gave up some big plays, but that’s what happens, not many teams have Vernon Davis on them, I’ll take my chances.

  10. BoomKentucky says:

I was concern about the line all last year. I was worried they didn’t do anything in the offseason to upgrade it. Now I have given up thinking about it. Going to be a long season if they cant run or protect Eli. Eli was lit up last year in the playoffs.

  11. Russo757 says:

whats up with Jacquan WIlliams (sp)? Did he get cut? He is still on the dept chart. I hated the guy at the start of last year but I thought he filled in nice toward the end. I’d like to see him get some snaps this year.

Thinking back he drew a lot of penalties chipping the wr’s too far out because he was use to college rules, which gave up a few unnecessary 1st downs. But he seemed to be an aggressive player and had a lot of upside.

Anyone else have an opinion on this kid?

    • ArthuroMolenda says:

He was hurt, came back to practice today.

He showed great athleticism but made his fair share of mistakes. He was a rookie, there’s hope.

    • Big Daddy says:

Williams hurt his hip, so did Herzlich. Williams put on 20 pounds of muscle and still runs a 4.5 40. He was going to have a great season. The injuries every year on this team is ridiculous.

  12. Big Daddy says:

DeVito owned Diehl all game until he came out.

Hendricks and Bernard against the #1 team namely Nick Mangold all pro, all star and brother of wonderful sister that was in the Olympics. No match there, especially if they double teamed them which they did. I would move JPP over to DT until Canty comes back, move Joesph back to the nose and JPP next to Tuck or go with the OLD type of 4-3 where the DTs play a 2 technique, nobody uses that anymore and it will cause confusion on the offensive lines.

Linebacker play will improve, Rivers is getting better and better. Blackburn plain sucks right now and I don’t see him getting better. Remember he was beaten out by Goff. Now he’s just older and slower. If Herzlich can’t go Boley has to be the MIKE. Jones in not ready, maybe never will be.

Barden should try signing with the Knicks.

If Beatty can’t go this line is in trouble. Mosley over Diehl and stop playing around, this kid has it or if he doesn’t you better find out fast because Diehl can’t block anybody. Locklear is just about cutting it. The line is better at pass blocking. Bennett is missing too many blocks and so is Bear, but we are talking about the Jets who have some great linebackers in there. Bart Scott made Bennett look silly on one play, he faked him out and sacked Carr. There’s still a lot of work to be done here and people MUST get healthy.

The last thing the Giants needed was this BS about hazing. But they might use it as a we against them thing to motivate themselves.

The idea that Dallas has a better 1-2 QB tandem is something I have to laugh at. If our back up was Terry Bradshaw at his age we would still have a better 1-2 tandem.

    • ArthuroMolenda says:

      Then laugh, big shot.

      • Big Daddy says:

No reason to be nasty, we are just giving opinions here that’s all. It’s not personal, you just made it personal because someone doesn’t agree with you. I didn’t make fun of you. I think you owe me an apology ArthuroMolenda.

        • ArthuroMolenda says:

I’m sorry I called you a big shot after you said my opinion was laughable.

I don’t mind losing an internet fight ^^

          • Big Daddy says:

I didn’t point that at you, in fact there are others who feel the same way as you do about the Dallas QBs. That’s why I didn’t direct it at you. You’re a loyal reader I wouldn’t do that to you. I’m sorry you felt I did. And I apologize for that.

    • Jason C. says:

Barden can’t sign with the Knicks, Dolan’s feelings will be hurt that he tried to get paid elsewhere.
