Giants interested in Charles Woodson?

The New York Giants have reached out to the representatives of former Packers CB/S Charles Woodson. We don’t know how interested the Giants are in a potential deal with Woodson, but there doing they’re due diligence. It is appearing more and more likely that S Kenny Phillips will price himself out of the Giants’ price range.

Giants C David Baas has restructured his contract to free up more then $2 million in cap space. And, if my math is right, the Giants now have about $6 million in room under the $123 million salary cap.

I think woodson would be a good fit for the giants, he would be an upgrade for what they have now.

Woodson strikes me as better at corner than safety these past couple of seasons. Yet with his age, at this point I would view him as a ‘stop-gap’ emergency type or late pickup that usually occurs during the course of a season and often due to injury or depth issues that occur to the roster. This is probably going to be a deep CB draft, so I would like to see the Giants find some young legs as they build a roster heading into camp.

Giants org is doing a nice job in focusing on fortifying the OL/DL with resigning of Beatty and replacing Canty with Jenkins. Games are won upfront in the trenches. I hope Diehl is released before Tuesday to clear more salary cap space to resign Bennett, Boothe, Cruz and take a shot at signing Woodson to replace KP. This way, the Giants can draft the best available collegiate players on their board and add young talent to LB/CB/OL positions. If recently cut Aaron Ross (30) is willing to come back, it might make sense for Giants to check him out for a back-up role. Rey Maualuga at MLB makes sense as an option too if Keith Rivers and Chase Blackburn both signs elsewhere. Here is my wishlist for April’s draft….

Round 1 – Alec Ogletree (LB), D.J. Fluker (OT) – prefer LB pick

Round 2 – Desmond Trufant (CB), Eric Reid (S), Arthur Brown (LB) – prefer CB pick if Ogletree falls to Giants’ lap in Round 1

Round 3 – Tank Carradine (DE) –> NFL Comparison Justin Tuck, Johnathan Banks (CB), Kyle Long (OG), Xavier Rhodes (CB)

Round 4 – Kevin Minter (LB), Marcus Lattimore (RB)–> NFL Comparison Arian Foster
