ESPN Power Rankings Week 1 – Giants Rank #12

The ESPN power rankings are out for the first week of the regular season – the Giants as usual underwhelm, coming in at number 12.

Even though the Giants have gotten healthier in recent days, the ESPN gurus have a sobering take on the state of Big Blue:

“As injuries pile up for Big Blue, no unit has been hit harder than the offensive line. Playing without center David Baas and tackle David Diehl will be tough.”

Baas’ absence is the most problematic as I’m sure most Giants fans would agree. There will be an adjustment period with OG Kevin Boothe filling in at Center, and OT James Brewer filling in at Left Guard as we saw in the preseason finale against the Patriots — but it was the best showing of the starting OL since Baas and Diehl exited the lineup with injuries.

I’m not convinced the Giants belong at #12 under the Redskins since our franchise QB isn’t the one coming off an ACL injury 7+ months ago, but Washington has looked impressive on both sides of the ball this preseason. Time will tell, but I think the Giants offense has improved every week culminating with that lovely 91 yard TD drive last week… a sorely needed scoring drive to instill confidence in the coaches, fans and most importantly – the NY Giants offense.
