The rumors have been flying that the Giants were going to keep their options open to sign a veteran RB sometime between weeks 1 and 2 of the regular season. And with Andre Brown added to short term IR today, that leaves a roster spot open for just such a veteran RB. Many have Brandon Jacobs pegged as the guy to fill the void left by Brown’s injury – but today multiple reports have confirmed the NY Giants hosted the following veteran running backs:
RB Jonathan Dwyer, formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
RB Leon Washington, just recently cut by the New England Patriots.
RB Beanie Wells, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals.
Let’s start with Washington since the Giants just saw him in action. Leon Washington looked great in the return game — give the man credit. But the Giants already are looking at rookie Michael Cox to be the KR man, and Washington is perhaps TOO seasoned of a veteran. In the carries he did get against the Giants last week, Washington failed to impress. Pass.
Beanie Wells will fondly be remembered by the Giants coaching staff for crushing our front 7 up and down the field the last time the Cardinals played the Giants, and when Wells actually played. And thats just it – the man is like a mini Brandon Jacobs in his prime when healthy, but he’s rarely healthy. I think the Giants will have to pass – he’s a liability.
Dwyer is perhaps the best fit as he’s young enough, has the right skill set, and seems to have a fumbling problem for Coughlin to fix. The Steelers had plenty of talent with 4 other RBs including Le’Veon Bell, LaRod Stephens-Howling, Isaac Redman and Felix Jones… so Dwyer’s departure was not due to lack of ability. I’m not surprised the Giants decided to bring him in for a closer look today.
If anyone has a shot to make this final roster spot, my money is on Dwyer.
