Who Will Have to Handle DeMarcus Ware?

Tom Coughlin is confident that both starting tackles for the Giants offensive line will be able to handle one of the NFL’s best pass rushers Sunday night – DeMarcus Ware.

On LT Will Beatty – who has been very good all preseason in keeping Eli upright:

“He’s our left tackle. We’ve made quite a statement to that effect. He’s had a good preseason. He’s fought through everything and not missed anything with regard to injuries. He’s gonna be ready to go. Great challenge, but he’ll be ready to go.”

But what about rookie starting RT Justin Pugh who is filling in for veteran David Diehl who had hand surgery for a thumb this preseason:

“DeMarcus is probably on the other side…. He hasn’t switched in preseason, but we’ll see. Ware is an outstanding football player, a Pro Bowl player year in and year out. We have a young guy that’s going to get his first start in the National Football League and he’s more than willing and he’s talented. If it so happens that they do flip and do some things of that nature, then I think he’ll be ready to play.”

That’s about all we can hope for. Beatty is a known entity, Pugh isn’t yet – although he did look very good against the Patriots defensive front in the preseason finale, good enough to instill a bit of confidence in all of us heading into this nightmare of a matchup.

The Cowboys defense, while banged up, is going to feature a new 4-3 Tampa 2 base defense run by new coordinator Montie Kiffen, and they have looked spirited this preseason in getting to the ball, flying around the field. They are fast, and they are hungry to make a statement. Eli Manning is prepared for the worst:

“Well, they’re still very talented on defense. You have DeMarcus Ware, you have Hatcher, you have two good corners. They’ve got talented players on their defense, their scheme will be very sound and let their athletes run. We’ve got to go back and look at some old film, some old Tampa stuff, some USC stuff, we have a lot of different film to look at. Obviously if you look at the preseason games, we kind of see what he’s done in the past so you have a little idea of what they’re going to do, what some of their blitzes and things might be. We know they’ll be talented so we have to go out there and execute.”
