What Does Perry Fewell Have Planned for New MLB Jon Beason?

This season the Giants have been starting Spencer Paysinger at middle linebacker, and he’s done a decent job so far. However, the LB crew in general has underwhelmed. If the RB for example gets past the front 4, they consistently get to the sticks instead of get cleaned up by LBs and held to 5 yards.

Enter veteran Jon Beason, former Carolina Panther and Pro Bowl MLB. Beason hasn’t been healthy since 2010, coming off an ACL in 2011 and micro fracture surgery last year. Since then, the Panthers have drafted for replacements and Beason was outplayed and benched even at weak side LB, which is not his natural position. Now he’s wearing a deeper shade of blue.

Giants fans have a right to be skeptical about this move – but on it’s face the Giants were looking for a game changing MLB that can sniff out and help clean up the run, and not be such a liability in pass coverage. We know what they saw in him in 2009, but that was 4 years and two major surgeries ago. Can he get back to dominating levels of play? We don’t know but the Giants are planning on unveiling their new MLB this week against the Bears.

Here is the snippet of Perry Fewell’s transcript regarding Jon Beason:

Q: Do you think Jon Beason may be in the mix this week?
A: We are going to incorporate him in our defense this week. We have certain packages that he will be involved in. He’s only been with us a couple of days, but we felt like it was important to get him involved as soon as possible.

Q: What has impressed you the most about Beason?
A: The first time we had a chance to see him live was today and his in-line quickness kind of stood out right off the bat. He’s an intelligent football man. We had a jog through practice yesterday and so his ability to communicate with the players and to come out and have good knowledge of what a 4-3 defense is and where to fit was impressive.

Q: How about him possibly making the calls at the mike? Are you just going to leave that up to Spencer?
A: We have a plan. Some of it he can handle. Some of it he can’t. He’ll grow with the system.

Q: Will you use him at the mike linebacker position?
A: Yes. We’ll use him as a mike linebacker. No question. Yes.

Q: Can he play in the nickel sets if you have two linebackers?
A: He can and he probably will. He can play in that spot as a middle linebacker. Again, we’ve only had him for a couple of days. So with the short week, a short preparation week, how much information can he digest and how much canhe continue to spit out and spit out correctly, we’re still working with him on that.

Going up against a gun slinging QB looking to exploit our defense with help from the RB and TE, our LBs are going to have to play lights out. I’m going to wait and see and not predict anything… we know he’s not the player he used to be. But we know what he needs to do. Jon Beason needs to make a statement and change the physicality of the center of this defense – it’s a tall order but perhaps he can help to that end.
