The NFL Week 8 Rankings – Visualized

Through the magic of PFF, Excel, and Infogram we have the week 8 NFL rankings — visualized for your enjoyment here on Giants Gab.

The Giants defense is gaining ground in the overall rankings since Jon Beason became the man in the middle for Big Blue. Without surrendering a touchdown in the last two games, things are really looking up. The Giants once again boast a top 5 run stopping team in the NFL, shutting down McCoy twice, Adrian Peterson, and Matt Forte the last several weeks. The Pass rush is still extremely disappointing, but with 4 sacks last week hopefully that’s the caffeine shot we need to get better. The pass coverage has gotten better the past couple of weeks with Prince Amukamara and Trumaine McBride, it’s deceiving to be ranked so low there.

The offense unfortunately is dragging this whole thing down, across the board. While Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox have been better in the run game, our offensive line is just not providing the holes they need to be really explosive. Hillis is pushing the pile really well so we’re getting into more 3rd and short situations to take advantage of, but overall it’s a struggle still to get our RBs into space. Eli hasn’t turned the ball over in two weeks — kinda feel like river dancing when I see that stat line — and that in large part is how the Giants have won these games. The defense is playing hard, putting us in good positions – an the offense isn’t putting us in bad situations. Could be better, could be a lot worse.

So when you see comparisons to the Jaguars, it’s not being fair to the progress that has been made over 8 weeks of football. I never thought they’d be 2-6 at this point. But if you asked me 3 weeks ago how optimistic I am regarding the rest of the season I’m pretty sure I’d say we were going to have the second pick in the 2014 draft. Now — we’ve got a shot to do something unprecedented. Win the division and make the playoffs at 2-6 entering the bye. They may not do it, but they have a shot.
