My Opinion; at the beginning of 2011, the last Giant Super Bowl victory, the Giant defense was atrocious as players seemed out of position on almost every play. Defensive backs and linebackers were running five and six yards behind a receiver, as it appeared almost comical. Players looked at each other on the sidelines trying to figure out who was right and who was wrong in their coverage’s. Frustration ruled! Then, Deon Grant was re-signed and the entire defensive unit seemed stabilized.
That team went on to a 9 and 7 season and eventually the Super Bowl, however, Without Deon Grant that might never have happened.
This year Deon Grant retired a Giant. I was interested in hearing his interview that took place with a Giant reporter about his future when the reporter asked a question about the Giants troublesome linebacker situation. Grant responded by saying that the linebackers have a really hard time in the Giants present defensive scheme. ‘So all the linebackers drafted and brought in as free-agents over the last three years where not the problem, but the scheme was?’
Yesterday, Justin Tuck gave credit to Jon Beason for the Giants defensive resurgence. Beason has been acting like an on the field coach in much the same way that Deon Grant did and Beasons relationship with Antrel Rolle was equally as important.
It reminds me of the fifth loss this season when the Giants set a league record for most points given up by and NFL team during consecutive games. In an interview Antrel Rolle said that the defensive players implored coach Perry Fewell to simply things, which he eventually did.
I grew up with great Giant defensive teams with players like Huff, Robustelli, Tunnell – right up until Taylor, Carson, Banks, Martin, Armstead and Strahan. I long for a great Giant defense again although I’m not sure if Jon Beason is enough to make it happen if the overall scheme is flawed? I hope he is, we will know in the next four weeks!
