Giants Looking to Sign A New Center

David Baas, the current NY Giants center, played three games last year. And he’s missed substantial time for the last 3 seasons he has been with the Giants. He’s now due about $5 million dollars and will count even more against the cap. The Giants 2010 offseason priority has become an albetross.

So – via the NY Daily News, the Giants are interested in bringing in New Orleans Center Brian de la Puente:

De la Puenta, 28, has been the starting center for the New Orleans Saints for the last three seasons and is one of the better centers on the open market. The 6-3, 306-pounder is expected to draw interest from several teams, though he might not get much from his old team who reportedly are ready to move Tim Lelito from guard to replace him.

Here’s my thinking — the Giants should re-sign Kevin Boothe for two years because he has done EVERYTHING they’ve asked him to do. Draft a new Guard this spring, restructure Snee, and hope Brewer catches on this year in camp in the new offense. We cannot be paying the interior linemen this much money for injuries… it’s not going to work. And Baas was NEVER that good gang. So instead of repeating this insanity of bringing in another teams castoff at a key position, let’s reward our Giants right now… guys like Boothe who are ego-less, work hard, keep their head down, and do everything they’ve been asked to do halfway well.
