Giants Select WR Odell Beckham, LSU

Well the 2013 Giants offense was broken according to John Mara — and Jerry Reese made a bold move to try and fix it with the 12th pick of the draft. LSU WR Odell Beckham is essentially going to be a Hakeem Nicks replacement that can also return punts and kicks. The theme to the 2014 NY Giants apparently is versatility, because the Giants have brought in 3 other guys that can return punts and kicks too. Should be an interesting camp this summer with lots of competition.

Here are Beckham’s highlights.

I was hoping the Giants would pick the OL Martin in this spot and address WR later in the draft, however, I admit the Giants are in desperate need of playmakers and Beckham is certainly supposed to be one.

Now it becomes the responsibility of Coughlin, McAdoo, and Ryan to get this guy ready. Beckham needs to be a starting WR the first game of the season. If he has trouble getting off the LOS clean against professional CB’s press coverage then they need to coach him up. If he has trouble running his routes at the professional level then they need to coach him up. The 2 WR’s picked before him will be starting day one, I suspect the 2 WR’s picked after him in the first round will also be starting day one for their respective teams. Beckham needs to be a starting WR, it is up to the coaching staff to develop his skills so that happens Game 1.

Lots of people love Beckham, but many were of the opinion that given all of the Giants needs, that this was not the best strategic decision by the Giants’ organization.
