New York Giants Invest Heavily In Defense

The New York Giants are entering a new era, after missing the playoffs for the past four years and then bidding adieu to Tom Coughlin, the Giants have had to open their wallets and spend like crazy.

The Giants have had to pay $40m, for this season at least, to re-sign Jason Pierre-Paul and lure fellow defensive end Olivier Vernon, defensive tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison, cornerback Janoris Jenkins and linebacker Kennan Robinson to the team that hasn’t done anything, since beating bitter rivals the New England Patriots, in the Super Bowl in February 2012.

With the stars the Big Apple team already possess, Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. leading their attack, they have enough be at the very least relevant in the poor NFC East, following two straight 6-10 campaigns.

Despite their record and a disappointing season, they actually weren’t far off clicking. They lost six games either late in the fourth quarter or in overtime. A few solid defensive plays and they easily could’ve been wins.

Giants appointed a new defensive coordinator to help solve this problem. Steve Spaguolo has excellent talent to work with, especially on the defensive line with JPP, Vernon, Harrison and Johnathan Hankins. If he manages to get this group firing on all cylinders, fans could be in for an exciting campaign. Spaguolo is confident coming into the new season: “We are going to be better because of better coaching, less mistakes. We are going to be better because it’s the second year in the system. That’s what we fully expect to do, everything that has and what we went through last year is over and done, we are moving on.”

Defense was a massive weakness last year, justifying the major investment in that area this offseason. Another huge bonus are the highly rated drafted youngsters the Giants chose, cornerback Eli Apple and playmaking wide receiver Sterling Shepard, of which much are expected.
