Giants to Chat with Steve Wilks and Eric Studesville About Head Coaching Job

The Giants plan to interview Steve Wilks and former Broncos running back Eric Studesville by midweek, a source confirmed to John Healy of the New York Daily News, with Wilks likely on Tuesday and Studesville on Wednesday.

They are likely to be the final two candidates interviewed.

Wilks, 48, became available for an interview after the Panthers’ season ended on Sunday in a 31-26 Wild Card round loss to the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Ron Rivera sounded resigned that his defensive coordinator would not be back next season.

“I know that Steve is a hot commodity, deservedly-so,” Rivera said after the game. “He has done a tremendous job wherever he’s been, starting in Chicago and San Diego and down here with us. It’s going to be a tough one. Him and Sean (McDermott) are two very god people who are very special to this organization. We helped build this team.

“I don’t want to talk as if Steve is gone, but I have a hunch. It might be his time.”

Wilks is not the favorite to land the Giants’ job, but is still a strong contender because of his relationship with Gettleman, Carolina’s GM from 2013-16. Gettleman thinks highly of Wilks and has been eager to get him in front of ownership, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Studesville, who was running backs coach for the Broncos from 2010-17 and with the Giants from 2001-03, was scheduled to interview last week but the Giants had to reschedule due to a snow storm.

The frontrunner to become Giants head coach remains Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who interviewed on Friday. The likelihood of McDaniels joining the Giants increased on Monday after the Bears announced the hiring of Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their head coach, which leaves the Giants, Colts or returning to the Patriots as McDaniels’ options.

Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who interviewed Saturday, is also a strong candidate but reportedly wants to bring free agent quarterback Case Keenum with him in a package deal wherever he goes.
