Giants Coach Pat Shurmur Feels WR Odell Beckham Jr. is ‘Inspired’ to Play in 2018

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur has taken the first step in establishing his relationship with Odell Beckham Jr., John Healy of the New York Daily News reports.

On ESPN Radio’s “Golic and Wingo” show Monday morning, Shurmur said he has already spoken to Beckham and believes the receiver is “inspired” for next season.

“Talking to him, he sounds inspired to get ready to have a really good year,” he said. “So I’m looking forward to that.”

Shurmur said at his introductory press conference on Friday that it would be a “clean slate” with Beckham and that he needs to get to know him.

“I need to get to know what makes him tick, and I need to talk to him about what it is that we’re looking for for a guy that plays for the New York Giants,” he said. “And I think those are the things that go back to relationship building that need to happen very, very soon.”

Shurmur further explained what it means to play for the New York Giants and said it is not something that only applies to Beckham — who has been subject to criticism for his lack of discipline on the field and sideline antics — but rather the team, which is coming off a 3-13 season in which its effort was questioned and the locker room began to fracture.

“There’s such pride, there’s such history here, I think it’s very, very important that we do what’s right,” he said. “I think the word culture thrown around a lot, I think it comes down to doing what’s right, competing, giving effort, and playing the game with respect.”
