Reese Says He’d Take Troubled WR Burress Back in 2009

One of the more interesting talks on Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis was that of Giants GM Jerry Reese, who spoke about troubled wide out Plaxico Burress. Reese says he wants Burress back in a G-Men uni next season, but is not sure if it will happen.

“I hope he’s motivated, but the legal process is what’s most important right now and his health is what’s most important right now,” Reese said. “But we’ll prepare as if he’s not going to be here, and if he is, it’s a bonus.” Burress has some big legal issues to overcome before he can make it back to the league in 09.

He faces felony charges of criminal possession of a weapon relating to the nightclub shooting which saw him shoot himself in the leg. Those charges could result in a prison sentence of 3 1/2 to 15 years if he’s convicted. Reese wouldn’t comment about the email sent last week by Burress’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, that said Burress was asking for a trade.

“We want him to be like everyone else as far as the team structure is involved,” Reese said. “Plaxico is a New York Giant right now, so I don’t know what it means to ‘have him back.’ He hasn’t gone anywhere yet.” Burress played in 10 games last season, catching 35 passes for 454 yards with four scores. The season before when the Giants won the Super Bowl, had had 70 catches for 1025 yards and 12 scores.
