Harvin to Work Out With Giants

From NY Daily News:

Percy Harvin, the dynamic all-purpose receiver out of the University of Florida, is due in for a private workout with the Giants on Thursday.

Harvin, a 5-11, 195-pounder, caught 40 passes for 644 yards and seven touchdowns in his junior year for the Gators. But that obviously doesn’t tell his whole story since he doubled as a running back and rushed for 660 yards and 10 touchdowns and led the entire country with a per-carry average of 9.4.

In the national championship game against Oklahoma, he caught five passes for 49 yards while rushing nine times for 122 yards and a touchdown.

Harvin has been projected mostly as a mid-to-late first-round pick, which means there’s a small chance he’ll still be there when the Giants pick 29th, though more likely they’d have to move up a little to get him.

Harvin, by the way, let word slip of his workout in interviews with reporters at his Pro Day on Wednesday. It was first discovered by my man, Ernie P who needed all of one day back at work to get a step ahead of the rest of us.

Harvin classified his date with the Giants as a “special teams” workout. And he also said he’s got private workouts scheduled with the Dolphins, Jets, Vikings, Bucs and Ravens.

Also reportedly due in for a workout with the Giants this week is Alabama guard Marlon Davis. He’ll be working out for the Jets, too.

While I was crusing the internet to see if there were any other reported visits I had missed, I noticed a couple of reports on players whom the Giants paid special attention to at either their Pro Day or at the combine. One wasPenn State DE/LB Aaron Maybin. The other was USC LB Clay Matthews.

A word of warning, now that we’re in to “private workout” season. They’re essentially meaningless. Teams bring in players for all sorts of reasons, including smokescreens. I’m not saying the Harvin visit is a smokescreen. Then again, if I remember correctly, neither Aaron Ross nor Kenny Phillips — the Giants’ last two first-round picks — made pre-draft visits to or had private workouts with the Giants.

So read them with interest, but don’t read into them too deeply.

    Re: Last Post

There is absolutely no way Maclin falls that far. If he slips past the Raiders I’d be shocked. We would have to move up to have any shot.

I think it is possible depending on how Teams see their WR. Not Probable, but possible.

There are those out there who like Hey Wood Bya more than Maclin. They don’t think Maclin will ever be a great route runner.

2006-1 WR taken in the first round. 2007-only Two taken in the first 23 picks. 2008-NO Wr’s taken in the 1st round. Growing Trend?

    I’m not sure.

I don’t want to give up any of the 1st three picks so we’ll see what happens.

    Thanks for the comment.

I’ve read the Giants like Hakeem Nicks a lot.
