Some Giants News and Notes

Tom Rock of Newsday was at the first open locker day during the offseason program, and this to say:

Osi Umenyiora was all smiles today and said he is “99 percent” with the final one percent being his mental ability to put pads back on and get on a field. He’s also cancelled his annual trip to Nigeria in favor of staying here and working hard toward the upcoming season.

Brandon Jacobs said he doesn’t expect his role to change very much in the offense now that Derrick Ward is gone, but he did say it could mean he gets five or so more carries per game. He also said he’s already thinking about his next contract because he believes he has more than the four years he signed for a few weeks ago left in his career.

As far as Plaxico Burress is concerned, there were a few opinions about him and his hearing which is scheduled for a week from today. Brandon Jacobs said he has spoken with him a few times and that Burress’ mood fluctuates between positive optimism that he’ll be back and concern that he could be spending the next 3 and a half years in prison. Umenyiora said he’s been told by some law enforcement friends of his that as a first-time offender Burress will not receive a sentence any harsher than five years of probation.

Spoke with Chris Canty and the topic of his height came up. He called himself “Six-seven and change,” refusing to admit that he’s 6-foot-8. He also said he’s fitting in well in the new locker room and hasn’t had to overcome any social obstacles that might have come from his past as a Cowboy. He is the one guy who can help the team understand what it will take to play on Thanksgiving Day, having done it the last four years in Dallas. When we were talking about the new stadium in Texas, one of the writers said that he couldn’t wait to go there and see the new place. “Me too,” Canty said, although it’s probably for different reasons.
