Braylon Edwards Plus A 1st Round Receiver?:

From Ralph Vacchiano:

The situation is still this: The Giants won’t offer more than a 2 and a 5. The Browns, as far as anyone knows, still want at least a 1.

But …

Don’t be shocked if Giants GM Jerry Reese tries for the Daily Double today anyway. The Giants will be drafting a receiver with the 29th pick (or whatever pick they trade up to) and he has no intention of handing that first-round pick over to Cleveland or Arizona or anyone, for that matter. But I hear he plans to place at least one more phone call to Browns GM George Kokinis sometime during the first round later tonight.

There isn’t much optimism that the Browns will take the 2 and the 5, or even negotiate for something more on the back end unless the Giants’ first-rounder is included – which I’m told it won’t be, under any circumstances. But there are some people in the NFL who believe the Browns will trade Edwards today, no matter what they get for him (Sirius NFL Radio’s Gil Brandt, for example, said there’s a “100 percent” chance Edwards becomes an ex-Brown today … and I believe him). So maybe Kokinis will blink and take the best offer he has on the table.

And if that’s the Giants’ 2 (45th overall) and 5 (151) from the Shockey deal? Well, Reese believes it’s worth one last check-in just to find out. And while it’s not likely – can I make it any clearer that I’m not saying this has much of a chance of happening? — it’s not completely impossible that Reese walks away from today with Darrius Heyward-Bey (or Hakeem Nicks) and Edwards in his pocket.

It makes sense, I’m told, because the Giants are very well aware that they don’t have a No. 1 receiver on their roster and, other than Steve Smith, they’re not even sure they have a good-enough No. 2.

And if Reese can pull that off — get Edwards and a first-round receiver — well, they might just rename the GM of the Year trophy “The Reese”. That would be one heck of a draft-day steal.
