Final Mini-Camp Report; Barden Injures Leg

Here is Mike Garafolo’s practice report from the final mini-camp practice, along with news on Ramses Barden’s injury:

First things first in your afternoon practice report: WR Ramses Barden left with a leg injury. It appeared to be a hamstring issue but nothing major as he had his leg wrapped and then stood and watched practice alongside fellow 6-6WR Micah Rucker, who was out once again with a hammy as well. Now, your final practice report of rookie camp:

Before he left practice, Barden bounced back from a shaky morning for his first homerun ball of the day. It came on a play-action deep post past CB DeAndre Wright.

Wright got his revenge on the first play of 7-on-7s when he knocked away a deep ball from Barden, who probably should have hung onto it on his way to the ground.

Wright later made his best play of camp when he stole a ball WR Daniel Polk was juggling for an INT. Tough to blame QB Rhett Bomar on that one.

Easy to credit Bomar for an excellent practice this afternoon. One of his better passes was a deep ball to WR Bruce Frances past CB Stoney Woodson. Bomar just seemed to flick the ball and it took off. His arm strength has looked pretty darn good the past two days. Bomar also hit to TE Jeff Postellon a flag past LB Andy Romans, found WR Shaun Bodiford running free in the secondary and hit TE George Wrighster with an absolute seed on a rollout.

Woodson struggled a bit today after getting off to a good start yesterday, but he did have a good pass defensed on a go to Barden in 1-on-1s.
THE UNDRAFTED FREE AGENTS Alex Field, who’s listed as a DE and had been playing there, was lined up at DT when he fought off a blocker to make a really nice stop on a stretch play on the first snap of team drills.

S Sha’reff Rashad wrapped up a very, very good camp today with a pass defensed on a ball for TE Travis Beckum one play after Field’s stop. Rashad also knocked a ball away from Postell during 1-on-1s and was rewarded with a high five from safeties coach Dave Merritt. I’ll have more on Rashad early next week.

Whoops, Rashad just made Tom Coughlin angry by getting too close to the QB on a blitz. “Sha!” Coughlin yelled before telling him to stay away from the guys in the red jerseys.

CB Bruce Johnson had a very good afternoon. He did a good job of staying on top of Bodiford on a deep ball from Bomar. Bodiford has been on the short end of a lot of deep balls all camp long. Not sure if that means he’s not fast enough or has just been on the wrong end of the draw on plenty of overthrown passes. He later had a ball go through his hands.

Johnson later defended a deep in and went over Bodiford’s back (no penalty) to knock away a hook.

Ho hum, another pair of back-to-back sacks by DE Maurice Evans.
Wrighster made a slick one-handed batch on a short out.

LB Kenny Mainor appeared to leave Wrighster alone on a ball up the seam, as he was immediately corrected by LB coach Jim Herrmann.

S Trimane Goddard made a good play to defend a pass from QB Andre’ Woodsonto Postell in 1-on-1s. Woodson overshot his targets on two other balls over the middle in 1-on-1s

Real nice juke by TE Cody Boyd on a Z-out to juke S Josh Gattis. Wouldn’t be shocked at all if Boyd was one of the tryouts who earned a contract this weekend.

And finally, LB Kevin Akins gets a gold star for livening things up with a little attitude this afternoon. Akins stepped in front of Beckum, ripped the ball away from him, turned back while he started to return the pick and yelled, “Gimme that!” Then, he raced toward the end zone.
