Sporting News Picks Giants to Be SuperBowl Champions

Sporting News Magazine has predicted that the New York Giants will win the Superbowl this year.

Sporting News Magazine showed 5 staff memebers and contributors picks and all chose the Giants to make it to the Superbowl with two of the five writers choosing the Giants to win the Superbowl.

Cliff Brown chose the Patriots over the Giants.

Albert Breer chose the Giants over the Chargers.

Dennis Dillon chose the Giants over the Patriots.

Russ Lande (ex N.F.L. scout) chose the Chargers over the Giants.

And Ronnie Lott contributor to SN, chose the Chargers over the Giants.

Talk about variety.

Obviously I’m kidding, but it’s interesting to see the selections that people have chosen.

I am not in love with the Chargers like everyone else is, the Chargers had one of the worst defenses in the league last year, and under Norv Turner the record has gotten consistently worse since he took over (from 14-2 to 11-5 to 8-8).

Maybe Shawne Merriman will turn a below average pass defense from last year into a Super Bowl caliber defense this year, but we’ll see. The Chargers have a tough road to the Superbowl (but easy road to win the division) as they will have to beat the usual suspects: the Pats, the Colts, the Steelers, and two other teams to get there.

I think the Giants CAN win the Superbowl, but I don’t know if they will. I think the Giants problems at WR are very overstated. I also think that the Eagles problems are understated, Many Giants fans were worried about the play of the Giants vs the Bears the other night, but I point to the Eagles play vs the Jaguars (who are not supposed to be a good team) the other night. The 1st team offense was stagnat and the first team defense was getting dominated.

I think the Eagles lost more on their team than people are willing to admit.

Matt Mosley from ESPN has written an article about Kenny Phillips.

Mosley is VERY high on Phillps for this year. He thinks he is almost assured a spot in the pro-bowl. I hope so. He’s a terrific young athlete.

Also, on my other blog I did a breakdown of the N.F.C. East which you can see here.

It’s a breakdown of the division from my perspective as well as a perspective of a fan from each team in the division.

Check it out if you have the time.

Lastly, another Giantsgab writer, Jeremy Fuchs wrote an article on Tyler Thigpen saying that the Giants should trade for Tyler Thigpen.

But I would have to respectfully disagree. I think David Carr is a very good backup Quarterback. When you get a backup Quarterback you want a guy who can make some plays and will try to limit the amount of games he costs you in an emergency. I don’t think there is more than 3 or 4 more physically gifted backup Quarterbacks in the league than David Carr. I’m find with Carr.

Second, I don’t like the idea of moving draft picks, even a later rounder especially for next year’s draft becuase I think the Giants will eventually have to select a Punter because Feagles can’t play into his 100’s, unfortunately.

Third, I like Thigpen more than I like Matt Cassell…for a different system. I think Thigpen is the ultimate system Quarterback. I believe Tyler Thigpen is very good in a “run and gun” or Shotgun spread system. That is a lot of what the Cheifs ran last year and it played to Thigpen’s strengths. I don’t think Thigpen’s strength meshes with what the Giants like to do, which is pound the ball and run play action.

People are always down on Eli Manning, but last year in third down and obvious passing situations Eli Manning was one of the best Quarterbacks in the league. Those pressure situations he seems to thrive often in.

Well, I don’t love it when everyone loves the Giants, but we’ll see what happens this year, it should be exciting.

If you didn’t already love Tuck, here is how he responded to being told SN picked the Giants to win the Superbowl.

“Let it be known that it really means nothing that y’all are picking us to win it-because we still gotta go out there adn play. I’m sure you won’t get that in the magazine”
