Five Keys to Beating the Redskins

I still can’t believe football is almost here. It’s been way, way too long. That said, we have to dive right in. The Giants take on the Redskins this week, and while most experts I see have the game ending up with the Giants taking the win, the Redskins are still a formidable team, and here are five keys to beating them.

1. Stop the Run

Clinton Portis, when healthy, is a tremendous running back. Problem is, he’s always banged up. But with a new season, he’ll be fresh as a daisy. The Giants need to stop him, or at the very least, contain him. If he goes wild, it will be a long day for the men in Blue. How do you stop him? Put the big bodies on the defensive line. Guys like Canty, Cofield and Bernard will be crucial.

2. Get in Jason Campbell’s face

Jason Campbell, while very talented, has not made the impact expected when he entered the NFL. And he doesn’t really have the weapons to help him. The pass rush has to be big. It has to be in his face. They have to rush linebackers, safeties. Bring the house, because the more pressure he feels, the less likely he has a big game.

3. Control the clock

Albert Haynesworth is one of, if not, the best defensive tackle in football. So how do you neutralize him? By controlling the clock on offense. Wear him down with the bruising running game of Brandon Jacobs. Make sure he’s on the field for a long time. This way, it will slow him down.

4. Brandon Jacobs

Jacobs is the key to the Giants success. By pounding the defensive line, he wears them down, and the Ahmad Bradshaw takes over for big gains. It’s a great system. He has to be great on Sunday. By wearing down Haynesworth, it will open up lanes in the passing game. The ‘Skins will have to bring 8 in the box to try and stop him, if he has a great day. If not, the Redskins can rush Eli all day.

5. Contain Brian Orakpo

I’ve been really impressed with Orakpo, both in college, and in preseason action. He has a knack for rushing the passer (there’s a reason his nickname is “O-Sack-Po”). With Albert Haynesworth most likely commanding double teams, the Giants will have to know where Orakpo is at all times. They’ll have to use a tight end, or an extra offensive lineman to contain him. He’s capable of having a huge day. The Giants better hope it’s not against them.

If the Giants execute these five things, they have a very good chance of winning.
