Wednesday Injury Update

Seven players that did not practice today and are on the Giants official pre-practice injury report include:

  1. LB Michael Boley (hip)
  2. CB Kevin Dockery (hamstring)
  3. C Adam Koets (ankle)
  4. CB Aaron Ross (hamstring)
  5. LB Clint Sintim (groin)
  6. WR Hakeem Nicks (foot)
  7. RB Danny Ware (elbow).

The status of Nicks and Ware are known of course and will be out atleast 2 more weeks and then will go day to day.

However – unexpectedly there were 2 late additions that went unmentioned. BOTH starting Safeties did not practice with the team today:

  • Michael Johnson
  • Kenny Phillips (knee)

Needless to say, the lack of depth in the Giants secondary is a major concern for the Giants… particularly heading into Dallas this Sunday. Uber-tight coverage and overly-physical presence on the Cowboys receiving core is going to be a key to this game, and right now it’s questionable whether or not the Giants can even get basic coverages established due to these injuries.

I think the outcome of this game is going to come down to who can put up the most points on the board — not an overly defensive battle. Both teams are going to be fired up with making a statement — and it starts with what you do well… for the Giants it’s the run, for the Cowboys it’s the air game.  The edge in defense I typically give to the Giants, but with this latest development in the health of the Giants secondary, a weakness there plays directly into the Cowboys hands. (We all saw what happened with mistakes and blown coverages in Tampa Bay)

It remains to be seen whether the Giants can count on their backups for critical stops, so this news will only fan the flames of uncertainty in the secondary. I like to think not all is lost here on Wednesday, because guys get nicked up all the time and play through it on Sunday. However this is an early test of the strength, depth, and resolve for the Giants, and a win here ends 99% of the criticism. A loss in Dallas, however, extends the uncertainty for atleast another month.
